Thiago Silva Held Without Bond Following Hearing – Charges Reduced From Attempted Murder

By Chris Taylor - February 7, 2014

UFC light heavyweight Thiago Silva appeared before Judge John Hurley today to answer for the charges stemming from his arrest yesterday evening (Feb. 6).

As you probably already know, Thiago Silva was arrested last night following a police stand-off at his Florida home.

As we reported earlier, the UFC light heavyweight fighter is apparently having marital problems, which included issues with famed jiu jitsu coach, Pablo Popovitch.

The state of Florida was originally pursuing attempted murder charges; however, Judge Hurley was not convinced that Thiago was ready to shoot his wife in the midst of their domestic dispute.

Still, Silva is being charged with multiple counts (2) of aggravated assault with a firearm and the court deemed Silva as  being a flight risk. Additionally, the judge labelled Thiago as a potential risk to the health and safety of the community, namely his wife and Pablo Popovitch, who were named as victims in Silva’s arrest.

The court was quick to point out a pattern of ongoing domestic violence, as Silva had allegedly put a gun in his wife’s mouth and stated that he would “kill her.” Thiago had also sent out death threats by way of text message to his wife. If that wasn’t enough, Silva also allegedly threatened to murder Pablo Popovitch.

The court ruled, and bond was ultimately withheld as Silva was instructed to surrender his passport.

With all that said, Thiago Silva is in a lot of trouble Penn Nation. So don’t expect to see him competing againt Ovince St. Preux at March’s UFC 171 event, that he was scheduled to take part in.
