Nick Diaz’s punishment for testing positive for marijuana on one of his UFC 183 post-fight drug tests has been decided and the Nevada State Athletic Commission did not hold back. The meeting was held on Monday afternoon and the NSAC has decided to suspend the former Strikeforce champion for five years from his failed drug test date.

Both Nick Diaz and Anderson Silva failed their drug tests for UFC 183, an event which they headlined. Silva failed the drug test for performance enhancing drugs and one of Diaz’s post fight drug tests showed traces of marijuana metabolites.

There is a lot of drama and controversy surrounding the failed drug test, however. Diaz passed the two drug tests ran by SMRTL while he failed the lone drug test ran by QUEST. Upon hearing the news, Diaz was suspended by the NSAC earlier in the year and he retained a law firm to aid him in this case.

After his hearing with the athletic commission was delayed several times, his hearing finally took place on Monday afternoon. It lasted over two hours and Diaz’s legal team made it a focal point of their argument to concentrate that he passed two drug tests while questioning the legitimacy of his failed test.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission was having none of it and suspended Nick Diaz for five years. Diaz was also fined 33% ($150,000) of his $500,000 fight purse.
