Johny Hendricks putting belt in vault, wants GSP next

By Chris Taylor - March 17, 2014

Newly crowned UFC welterweight champion Johny Hendricks is not planning on parading around town with his recently acquired gold belt.

Instead, the product of Oklahoma is taking the strap to the bank for safe keeping, as he told MMAjunkie Radio in an interview earlier today:

“I’m going to put it in a vault,” Hendricks stated. “It’s going to be locked away.”

Hendricks defeated Robbie Lawler by unanimous decision in an absolute slugfest on Saturday night to earn the UFC’s vacant welterweight title.

The vacant title was left behind by none other than Georges St. Pierre, who chose to take some time away from the sport, this after narrowly defeating Johny Hendricks at UFC 167 in November of last year.

“Big Rigg” has already stated that it’s not the champions job to call out challengers, but if he had the chance to choose his next opponent, it would definitely be GSP:

“There’s only one person I’d like to fight, and I’m pretty sure everybody knows who that is,” said Hendricks. “And that’s Georges St-Pierre. I would like to get back into the octagon with him. If that can happen, then I want that. So that’s what I’m really shooting for.”
