Vitor Belfort was slated to fight Chris Weidman on December 6th at UFC 181 in a long awaited matchup for the UFC middleweight title, however earlier this month news broke that Weidman had suffered a hairline fracture in his hand, and as a result, the bout was postponed until February of 2015.

‘The Phenom’ doesn’t necessarily believe Weidman is injured however.

His words, via Combate.com:

“I didn’t believe in the beginning, after all, it’s his second straight belt defense that had to be delayed because of an injury. I think that all titleholders that have more than one injury, the UFC should create an interim title in their divisions. Nobody would lose, not the fans, not the fighters, not the UFC, only the injured athlete.”

The interviewer was quick to remind Belfort of the time he too had to cancel a bout due to a broken hand. The bout being referred to is when Belfort was slated to fight Wanderlei Silva in 2012.

“Injuries are part of the sport, because we have to train at a high level pace. But hurting himself twice in a row with such little time of career? Are you kidding me? To me, he wanted to keep his belt during the christmas and that was the only way.”

“I haven’t fought in the UFC but we have daily fights at Blackzilians. Just see our team. As I said before, when a champion hurts himself more than once, it should have an interim title in the line. I want to fight.”
