Report | The UFC planned a mini-tournament featuring four of the promotions biggest stars

Following the conclusion of April’s UFC 223 event in Brooklyn, the promotion considered having a mini-tournament which would have featured four of the sports biggest stars. Ariel Helwani reported the UFC’s unique idea, which has apparently stalled, earlier this afternoon.

Jon Jones picked up arguably the greatest win of his professional mixed martial arts career last month in Anaheim when he scored a third-round TKO victory over Daniel Cormier in the main event of UFC 214. Immediately following his victory over “DC”, which earned Jones the UFC’s coveted light heavyweight championship, “Bones” decided to issue a challenge to former UFC heavyweight kingpin Brock Lesnar.
UFC Fighters weigh in on the tragic events in Charlottesville

One person was killed and nineteen were injured when James Alex Fields Jr. slammed his vehicle into a group of counter-protestors in Charlottesville, Virginia. Fields Jr. was arrested shortly after the incident and on Saturday he was charged with second-degree murder.

UFC to layoff off 60 to 80 employees in massive shake up

The new owners of the UFC are apparently looking to clean house and are laying off between 60 to 80 employees, UFC insiders confirmed. The mass lay-offs follow recent reports of low morale at the UFC’s Las Vegas HQ, with one employee likening the atmosphere as “like a morgue”.

Undefeated Sage Northcutt has taken a shift in the UFC. After Northcutt’s originally scheduled lightweight opponent Andrew Holbrook had to pull out of their fight set for UFC on FOX 18 this Saturday, Northcutt was given a new opponent at welterweight. Northcutt is now set to fight Bryan Barberena at 170-pounds and is loving that he gets to eat more ahead of his fight. Northcutt spoke with MMA Junkie recently on how he is feeling ahead of his bout this weekend.

Donald Cerrone very well may have sparked a revolution when he posted a photo on Instagram of himself rocking Nike shorts and shoes along with a caption praising Nike. The post was an obvious slap in the face to Reebok, who recently fined Cerrone for a uniform infraction. Now, former UFC light heavyweight kingpin Jon Jones took to Twitter to thank Nike for their wrestling shoes. In addition, UFC flyweight Ian McCall also posted a photo to Instagram praising Nike.

Every once in awhile someone on Twitter pushes UFC President Dana White to a point where he goes off. Recently on Twitter, a fan called out White for putting Artem Lobov on the UFC Fight Pass preliminary card of what is now known as ‘UFC Fight Night: Hendricks vs. Thompson’.
