Alberto Mina defeats Yoshihiro Akiyama via controversial split-decision

The second bout of the UFC Fight Night 79 main card featured a welterweight tilt between Yoshihiro Akiyama (14-6 MMA) and Alberto Mina (12-0 MMA).

The bell sounded and both men rushed forward to get things started in round 1. Akiyama and Mina traded some devastating leg kicks in the opening round, but it was Mina who was able to land the better punches and scored a late takedown.

Akiyama landed a big right hand at the start of round 2 that seemed to have Mina in trouble. Some solid leg kicks from Akiyama and Mina is noticeably in pain and slowing down. The Japanese fighter continued to press the action on the Brazilian and seemed to be well on his way to winning round two until Mina landed a huge left hand, followed by a right, that absolutely floored Akiyama. Yoshihiro was able to survive round two, but was clearly saved by the bell.

Akiyama landed a big uppercut on Mina in the opening stages of round three. The Japanese standout continued to batter the legs of Mina with heavy kicks and the Brazilian was in obvious trouble. Akiyama scored a takedown and began landing some solid ground and pound on Mina. The final bell would sound with Akiyama in top position dropping down punches on Mina.
