Sean Strickland slams California amid Cain Velasquez’s prison release: ‘What Cain did was right’

Former UFC heavyweight legend Cain Velasquez was recently released from prison 10 months after pleading no contest to attempted murder, among other charges. The circumstances around Velasquez’s sentence have been heavily discussed, and Sean Strickland is glad that the former champion is a free man.
Last year, Velasquez was given a five-year sentence with 1,283 days credited for time served. Back in Feb. 2022, Velasquez shot at a vehicle with Harry Goularte as a passenger. Goularte’s stepfather suffered a non-life threatening injury during the incident. Goularte has been accused of molesting Velasquez’s son and is awaiting trial for a felony charge of lewd acts with a minor. Despite this, Goularte is currently out on bail.
The situation doesn’t sit well with Sean Strickland, who said an interview that the state of California botched the situation with Velasquez.
“It’s [expletive] crazy,” Strickland said. “Mind you, we are a country of laws, but when is shooting a [expletive] pedophile illegal? I guess forever, but I don’t know. Just like the nanny state we’re in, they just try to castrate every man. The whole world knows what Cain did was right, and law or not, it’s just an example of the nanny state just trying to castrate every man in America.”
Velasquez is now free on parole. A restitution hearing is set for June 3 to determine how much is owed to Goularte’s stepfather.
Meanwhile, Strickland is set for a UFC Houston showdown against Anthony Hernandez on Saturday. It’s a pivotal bout in the middleweight division, and BJPenn.com will be bringing you live updates throughout the event.
