Russell Ess - February 10, 2017
The #1 UFC ranked lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov and #2 ranked Tony Ferguson are set to meet in the Octagon for the interim UFC lightweight belt at UFC 209 on March 4. However, the future of a lightweight title unification bout is hazy as Conor McGregor currently holds the undisputed lightweight title and is taking time off from fighting for the birth of his first child. Ferguson feels that “The Notorious” is just trying to slip away from defending his title. With McGregor most recently stating at his pay-per-view interview that he only has Floyd Mayweather in his sights for his next bout, Ferguson may be right. “The Notorious” predicted that the fight with Mayweather will come together toward the end of this year or early next year, which would mean it could be quite some time before we see “The Notorious” back in the Octagon if a bout with Mayweather is truly his next fight.

Tom Taylor - January 10, 2017
Back in July of 2016, Jackson-Winkeljohn student Lando Vannata made a short notice UFC debut against one of the best lightweights in the world: Tony Ferguson. Though Ferguson was expected to blow through his debuting foe, this is not the way things went down. Twice in the fight’s first round, a surprisingly confident Vannata was able to push his experienced foe to the very brink of a stoppage. In the second round, Ferguson was able to shake off the cobwebs and lock up a d’Arce choke for the win, but Vannata’s performance immediately earned him a reputation as a fighter to watch in the UFC lightweight division.

Nurmagomedov manager: reports of finalized UFC 209 bout with Ferguson "100% not true"
Tom Taylor - December 26, 2016
November was an incredible month for the UFC lightweight division. The most important moment of the month, of course, was Conor McGregor’s title-winning destruction of Eddie Alvarez. That said, the month also included huge wins from top contenders Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov, who defeated top-flight foes in Rafael Dos Anjos and Michael Johnson respectively. Under normal circumstances, McGregor would now have his sights set on a defense against either Ferguson or Nurmagomedov – though it’s difficult to say who of these two talents deserves the opportunity more. Instead, however, the Irish champion is taking a break from competition to start a family with longtime girlfriend Dee Devlin. While McGregor takes this paternity leave, Ferguson, Nurmagomedov, and the lightweight division’s other contenders have been left to squabble amongst themselves while they wait for their absentee champion to return.
