Kamaru Usman on Colby Covington: "I truly want to put my hands through his face"

Tom Taylor - September 11, 2018

Kamaru Usman is one of the top welterweights in the world, situated amongst other stars like UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley, recent title challenger Darren Till, and former interim champion Colby Covington. Interestingly, Usman says he has a lot of respect for both Woodley and Till — to the point that if he had to fight either man, it would be purely business, with no ill-will involved. If he had the chance to fight Covington, however, Usman says it would be far more than just business, as he’s developed some real animus toward his rival.

Tyron Woodley not going to fight Kamaru Usman if Darren Till can't go at UFC 228

Drake Riggs - August 27, 2018

The UFC welterweight champion of the world makes his return at UFC 228 on September 8. And in case his opponent can’t fight, a backup is on standby. The champion Tyron Woodley will look to defend his title against Darren Till in UFC 228’s main event. And a big question heading into this fight is ‘can Till make weight?’ as he missed for his last time out against Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson.

Surging UFC welterweight contender Kamaru Usman has been tapped as the official understudy for the UFC 228 main event, in the event that either welterweight champion Tyron Woodley or challenger Darren Till fails to make it to the cage. Speaking on a recent episode of The MMA Hour, Usman divulged that he will not be surprised if his services are needed. While he doesn’t seem to expect much trouble on Woodley’s side, he is doubtful Darren Till will make weight.

Injuries, weight cut issues, you name it and a fight can be canceled for it. Which is why it’s good to see that the UFC is now starting to have fighters on standby for their main events. We saw it most recently with international fight week wherein the case that a headlining fighter couldn’t go, someone else was ready to step in and replace them.

Kamaru Usman shares hopes for star-studded UFC card in Africa

Tom Taylor - June 7, 2018

After watching Darren Till get a hero’s reception in his hometown of Liverpool, welterweight contender Kamaru Usman is hoping for a similar experience in Africa. While Usman hails from Nigeria, he feels that, if the UFC called on all of its African stars, it could sell out a stadium in pretty much any African nation. In a perfect world, Usman can imagine himself, Cameroonian-French heavyweight Francis Ngannou, Nigerian-born Kiwi middleweight Israel Adesanya, and Ghanaian welterweight Abdul Razak Alhassan, all competing on a star-studded card in a stadium somewhere on the African continent.

After win over Demian Maia, Kamaru Usman is only interested in two matchups

Tom Taylor - May 20, 2018

Fresh off a dominant decision victory over former UFC middleweight and welterweight title challenger Demian Maia, surging welterweight Kamaru Usman wants a crack at divisional kingpin Tyron Woodley. He feels it’s a fight he’s earned, and interestingly, an easier fight than the one he just had with Maia. “I think I should fight for the belt next,” Usman said at the post-fight press conference for the UFC’s debut in Santiago, Chile, where he defeated Maia (via MMA Fighting). “I just dominated [Maia] better than [UFC champion] Tyron Woodley. Tyron ran from him the whole fight. Tyron threw, what, the fewest strikes in a championship fight ever? And I just went out and I dominated the guy from start to finish.”

Usman’s win became even more impressive post-fight, when he divulged that he believed he’d broken both of his hands early in the contest. With this win over Maia, Usman improved to a solid 13-1 overall, and a flawless 8-0 in the UFC’s Octagon. Needless to say, he’s now one of the welterweight division’s top contenders, and is in sprinting distance of a fight with reigning champion Tyron Woodley.

MMA community reacts to Kamaru Usman's dominant decision defeat of Demian Maia

Tom Taylor - May 20, 2018

Last night, in the main event of the UFC’s debut in Santiago, Chile, surging UFC welterweight contender Kamaru Usman picked up his biggest win yet, authoring a dominant unanimous decision victory over Brazilian jiu jitsu ace Demian Maia. Usman, who was originally expected to battle Argentine striker Santiago Ponzinibbio in the UFC Chile main event, faced a spot of adversity in the first round, succumbing to Maia’s first takedown attempt, and nearly giving up his back to the vaunted grappler. From there, however, Usman thwarted every one of Maia’s takedowns. This allowed him to bludgeon the Brazilian on the feet for the remainder of the fight.

UFC Chile Results: Kamaru Usman defeats Demian Maia

Chris Taylor - May 19, 2018

A key welterweight fight between former title challenger Demian Maia and surging division contender Kamaru Usman served as the headliner of tonight’s UFC Fight Night 129 event in Chile. Round one begins and Kamaru Usman starts off quickly. He throws a jab and then another. Maia is circling looking for a way inside. Demian shoots in and secures a takedown. Usman immediately scrambles and is lucky to get back to his feet. Maia stays on him and ends up securing Usman in what looks like a standing twister position. Maia begins to throw some punches and suddenly the referee steps in and breaks up the fighters. That was an odd break up. Regardless we continue and Usman takes the center of the octagon. Kamaru with a jab. Maia answers with a left hand over the top. Maia circles along the cage. He fires off a left that misses. Usman lands a right and the horn sounds to end round one.
