Mark Henry, the famed striking coach of former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar, was not at all surprised when Nate Diaz defeated Conor McGregor in the main event of UFC 196 this past weekend in Las Vegas. Henry was in attendance at UFC 200 and had this to say about the McGregor vs Diaz result:

The Frankie Edgar title shot campaign continued following UFC 196, where Conor McGregor was submitted by Nate Diaz in the main event. Following the loss, McGregor stated that he plans to drop back down to featherweight to defend his championship belt. This opened the flood-gates for discussion regarding who would get the first crack at McGregor’s featherweight championship. While some want to see McGregor vs. Aldo II, Frankie Edgar wants the title shot that was promised to him after he knocked out Chad Mendes at the TUF 22 finale back in December.

After Frankie Edgar knocked out Chad Mendes in the main event of ‘The Ultimate Fighter 22’ finale back in December, UFC President Dana White stated that there was no denying Edgar any longer, and that he would get whatever he wanted in terms of a title shot. The next night at UFC 194, Conor McGregor knocked UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo out cold in just 13 seconds to claim the featherweight championship.

After Rafael dos Anjos withdrew from UFC 196 with a broken foot, the UFC reportedly went to Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar first to offer them a fill-in slot against Conor McGregor. Unfortunately, Jose Aldo turned the bout down because he wasn’t in shape, and Frankie Edgar turned the bout down because he was injured.

After Nate Diaz was given the spot opposite Conor McGregor at UFC 196, UFC President Dana White revealed that Frankie Edgar was forced to turn the bout down due to a torn groin. After it was announced that Diaz had taken the fight on short notice, Edgar went off on the UFC for making it seem as though he refused the fight, when in reality he was unable to accept. Edgar went as far as to say that the ‘C’ in UFC stands for Conor.

Wednesday afternoon at the UFC 196 press conference in California, Conor McGregor threw some verbal jabs at Rafael dos Anjos, Frankie Edgar, and Jose Aldo. McGregor taunted dos Anjos for pulling out of the fight with a ‘bruised foot’, as well as taunting Frankie Edgar and Jose Aldo for not accepting the fight after campaigning for it for so long.
