Cody Garbrandt assures he can make flyweight, shares his walk-around weight as proof
Tom Taylor - April 5, 2017
Late last month, UFC bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt suggested that, if he’s able to defend his crown against rival TJ Dillashaw later this year, he’d next like to drop down to flyweight to try to foil Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson’s history-making 11th title defense. “I’d rather go down [to flyweight] before I go up [to featherweight]” the bantamweight champ told Onnit CEO Audrey Marcus (via MMAJunkie.com). “Demetrious has a fight with Wilson Reis in the not too distant future that’s coming up. He’ll tie Anderson Silva’s record, then his next fight would be the all-time record. He’s going for the huge record. Make him earn it [by fighting me].”
Cody Garbrandt wants to drop to flyweight and spoil Demetrious Johnson's title defense record
Tom Taylor - March 30, 2017
UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson has quietly assembled one of the longest championship win-streaks in UFC history, having defended his belt a whopping nine times. If he successfully defends his title against Wilson Reis at UFC on Fox 24 this April, he’ll make it 10, and tie Anderson Silva for the record. Johnson’s next defense after Reis, then, would give him the opportunity to make history with the most consecutive title defenses of any UFC champion. While Johnson’s opportunity to set this record is still some time away – and contingent on the outcome of his fight with the dangerous Reis – one fighter is already angling to spoil it. And not just any fighter: UFC bantamweight champion Cody Garbrandt.
Demetrious Johnson: People misunderstand Tyron Woodley when he talks about racism
Tom Taylor - March 14, 2017
Over the last few months, UFC welterweight titleholder Tyron Woodley has generated some controversy among fans by suggesting that he deals with racism, even as a UFC champion. “If you look at the history of our sport – and it’s not even our sport, the history of the American culture – certain things are subliminally embraced that are racist,” Woodley said on a January episode of The MMA Hour. “When you say to me ‘Tyron, you are well spoken’, what does that mean? Does that mean I’m well spoken comparable to all the mixed martial artists, the 500 UFC fighters on the roster? Or does that mean as a black male in America?”

Tom Taylor - February 12, 2017
In July of 2016, Brazilian flyweight contender Wilson Reis was scheduled for a title fight with dominant divisional king Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson. Unfortunately, Mighty Mouse was then forced out of this fight with an injury, depriving Reis of his long-awaited shot at gold. In a brave display, Reis then agreed to take a high-risk, low-reward fight with the relatively unknown Hector Sandoval. When Reis won this fight, he expected to be rescheduled for a fight with the champion. Instead, however, he was paired with another relative unknown in Japan’s Ulka Sasaki, who he defeated by unanimous decision on UFC 208’s undercard.

And though very few people gave him much of a chance against the dominant flyweight king, he actually put up a remarkably good fight. In the end, however, Mighty Mouse walked away with a unanimous decision win, leaving Elliott’s title dreams momentarily dashed.

Sorry 'Mighty Mouse,' Dana White thinks Conor McGregor is MMA's pound-for-pound king
Tom Taylor - December 23, 2016
With former UFC light heavyweight title challenger Jon “Bones” Jones currently serving a year-long suspension, MMA’s pound-for-pound debate has typically come down to one man: Flyweight champ Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson. When Conor McGregor defeated Eddie Alvarez to win the UFC lightweight title in November, however, he made a strong case for a spot atop the pound-for-pound list, as he was already the champion at featherweight, and he had recently won a fight at welterweight against Nate Diaz. In the opinion of UFC President Dana White, McGregor’s recent multi-weight accomplishments make it impossible to deny his status as MMA’s pound-for-pound king. White explained this feeling in an interview on The Michael Kay Show (via MMAFighting.com).
