Conor McGregor calls Max Holloway trilogy ‘The last dance’ as he confirms Dana White’s recovery claims

Former two-division UFC champion Conor McGregor’s days in the promotion could be numbered after his recent post on social media.

Conor McGregor’s first fight in five years ended disastrously against Max Holloway just seconds into their UFC 329 headliner. After a failed spinning wheel kick to open up the fight, McGregor suffered a right leg injury that forced referee Herb Dean to wave off the fight.

It was McGregor’s second-straight fight that ended in a leg injury after shattering his left leg against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264. McGregor suffered a torn ACL and meniscus and is expected to be sidelined for at least a year before potentially returning to the Octagon.

McGregor’s hopes for his highly-anticipated comeback were dashed inside the Octagon at UFC 329. Now, many cast doubt as to whether or not McGregor will fight again following his recent history of devastating injuries.

UFC CEO Dana White appeared at the recent Zuffa Boxing post-fight press conference and confirmed that McGregor will be sidelined for one year to recover from his injuries. This was the expected best-case scenario for McGregor after he recently teased a return to the cage next year.

If McGregor pursues a trilogy with Holloway in 2027, he recently hinted it’ll be the final chapter of his Mixed Martial Arts career.

In a recent Instagram post, McGregor appeared to respond to White’s comments.

“What was to be a generational beating is now to be reset,” McGregor posted.

“International Fight Week 2027, the last dance.”

McGregor hasn’t won a UFC fight since knocking out Donald Cerrone at UFC 246 in January 2020. He lost back-to-back fights to Poirier in 2021 before his failed comeback bout against Holloway.

As for what’s next for Holloway, he’s expected to fight at least once before potentially running it back with McGregor next year. He could potentially fight another top lightweight contender, Paddy Pimblett, for his next bout.

In the meantime, McGregor will look to secure his latest UFC comeback bid and get healthy in time for 2027 International Fight Week.
