When Frankie Edgar defeated Chad Mendes via KO in the main event of the TUF 22 Finale, UFC President Dana White stated that no one could deny Edgar any longer, and that he would be next in line for a title shot at featherweight.
The following night Conor McGregor knocked out Jose Aldo in 13 seconds to end the nearly 5-year reign of ‘Scarface’, and stir up the featherweight title picture.
While many believed that Aldo should get an immediate rematch given how many years he was champion, others believe that Edgar should finally get the title shot he deserves.
To add to the confusion, Conor McGregor stated that he was going to move up to lightweight to challenge Rafael Dos Anjos.
Chael Sonnen believes that Edgar should finally get his title shot. He spoke on MMAJunkie Radio:
“You’ve got to defend the belt,” Sonnen told MMAjunkie Radio. “In my opinion, you can’t just vacate a belt.”
“He’ll get his shot either way; this isn’t about Frankie. He will get his shot, whether he and Jose have to fight for the vacated title or he and Conor do it. I just really want to see him fight Frankie.”
