Fight of the Night: Ryan Benoit vs. Josh Sampo This will be a night that Ryan Benoit will never forget. Benoit and Sampo were set to have their UFC debuts be against each other tonight but Sampo risked all of that when he missed weight yesterday. Benoit accepted the bout figuring it would keep him in the good-graces of the UFC Brass and, boy did that pay off quickly. They kicked the night off with an exciting back and forth fight that saw Sampo finish Benoit in the second round with a rear naked choke. Ryan Benoit and Josh Sampo were awarded Fight of the Night honors, but Sampo saw none of that money due to him missing weight. Ryan Benoit would get Sampo’s half, earning $100,000 for two rounds of action. Not bad for a UFC debut.

Including preliminary bouts, we went four hours into the event until we heard Diaz and Maynard mentioned for the first time. They didn’t even need a round to steal the show. Unfortunately for Maynard, it was at his expense.

David Grant and Chris Holdsworth brought the crowd to life with their performance in the first round. Grant cracked Holdsworth with a combination early on, but it only brought the aggressive side out of his opponent. Holdsworth nailed Grant with a combination of his own and landed a big right hand that sent Grant stumbling back, but it led to nothing. The round ended with Holdsworth on top of Grant, essentially rewarding him the round.

The first round was all Jessamyn Duke. She attacked right from the start and even when she was in a disadvantageous position, she was still throwing blows. Morgan had Duke pressed against the fence, but Duke was still throwing knees from the clinch. After she turned the tables and put Morgan against the fence, she hopped up and tried to end the bout with an arm-in guillotine. She didn’t have the positioning to crank, so she transitioned to a triangle choke attempt that Morgan defended until the end of the round.
