UFC Vegas 89 Results: Rose Namajunas defeats Amanda Ribas (Highlights)

Namajunas (11-6 MMA) will enter tonight’s headliner looking to snap a two-fight losing skid. ‘Thug’ made her flyweight debut this past September, where she suffered a unanimous decision loss to Manon Fiorot. Prior to that, she dropped a decision to Carla Esparza to lose the strawweight title.

Meanwhile, Amanda Ribas (13-4 MMA) most recently competed last November, where she scored a third-round TKO victory over Luana Pinheiro. That finish got Ribas back into the win column, as she had previously suffered a TKO loss to Maycee Barber.

Round one of the UFC Vegas 89 main event begins and Amanda Ribas comes forward quickly. She swings and misses with a low kick. She attempts a high kick, but that to misses the mark. Rose Namajunas steps into the pocket with a right hand. Ribas lands a low kick. ‘Thug’ goes to the body with a right hand. The ladies exchange low kick. Namajunas replies with a nice 1-2. She follows that up with a good jab. Amanda Ribas with a spinning back kick that partially connects. She shoots in for a takedown and gets it. However, Rose uses a whizzer to immediately pop back up to her feet. Ribas with a low kick. Rose Namajunas with a nice body shot and then a good right hand. Ribas forces the clinch. She looks for a judo throw but Namajunas rolls through and take top position. ‘Thug’ with a nice elbow from the top. She’s working from half guard position. Some nice right hands now from the former strawweight champion. Rose is covering the mouth of Amanda while landing right hands. She switches to elbows before the horn sounds to end round one.

Round two of the UFC Vegas 89 main event begins and Amanda Ribas comes forward and lands a low kick. Rose Namajunas misses with a head kick attempt. She leaps into the pocket and lands a right. Ribas counters with another low kick. A good left now from ‘Thug’. She is starting to find her range here. Ribas continues to remain aggressive and force the action. Namajunas keeps her at bay with a stiff right up the middle. Rose shoots in and lands a takedown. However, Amanda Ribas immediately scrambles back up to her feet. Namajunas drags Ribas back down to the floor but ends up in a leg lock. She escapes and is able to take top position. Ninety seconds remain in the second frame. Ribas is landing some decent elbows from off her back. Namajunas closes out the round on top but didn’t have a ton of success from top position.

Round three of the UFC Vegas 89 main event begins and Amanda Ribas comes out firing. She throws up a high kick that partially connects. Rose Namajunas lands a nice low kick and then a right hand. Ribas with a good kick that causes ‘Thug’ to stumble. She appears to be ok, so it was more of a slip. Namajunas with a nice 1-2. Ribas continues to press, but Rose is countering very well now. The fighters clinch and Namajunas lands a knee to the body. They break and Ribas attempts a spinning backfist. Rose Namajunas with a nice left hand. Amanda Ribas returns fire with a good straight right. The fighters clinch up and a couple of wild scrambles ensue. Rose gets dumped right on her head and now Amanda has top position. Big shots from Ribas now. Namajunas attempts to scramble but gives up her back. The horn sounds to end round three.

Round four of the UFC Vegas 89 main event begins and Amanda Ribas’ corner believes she is close to a finish. She lands a low kick, but Rose counters with a right hand. The Brazilian with a good right. Namajunas answers with a left hand. Ribas with a low kick and then one upstairs that partially connects. Rose Namajunas shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Ribas is looking for a triangle choke attempt. She gives up on that and lands some hard elbows from off her back. Rose is on top but once again is failing to get off any good offense. Amanda Ribas threatens with an armbar. Namajunas avoids and lands some decent ground and pound to close out the fourth frame.

The fifth and final round of the UFC Vegas 89 main event begins and the ladies trade kicks. Rose Namajunas with a nice counter right hand. Amanda Ribas is still pressuring, but she is having a tough time finding the mark with her shots. Namajunas is utilizing some crafty footwork to keep the range advantage. Ribas with a 1-2 and then a nice kick to the body. Namajunas with a right hand in return. Two minutes remain. Another body kick from Amanda Ribas. The former strawweight champion lands a right hand and then a knee to the body. We are now in the final minute. Ribas misses with a spinning kick. Namajunas lands a left. A good counter right now from ‘Thug’. Ribas charges forward with a 1-2. She throws a high kick that misses. Rose with a low kick. The horn sounds to end the fight.
