Former PRIDE boss Nobuyui Sakakibara introduced his brand new MMA promotion during a press conference in Tokyo on Thursday. The new promotion will be called Rizin Fighting Federation and the two-night event in December will be called the “Rizin Fighting World Grand Prix 2015”.

Well it’s official. We now know the name of the new MMA organization out of Japan, run by former PRIDE FC boss Nobuyuki Sakakibara. At a recent press conference it was announced that the promotion will be called ‘Rizin Fighting Federation.’ Many expected them to announce Fedor Emelianenko’s opponent at the press conference, but that wasn’t the case. Earlier in the week it was reported that his opponent will be a 1-0 MMA fighter named Jaideep Singh. So, we still don’t know 100% if that’s the case. At the presser they did announce that there will be a two night event called the Rizin Fighting World Grand Prix 2015. There are three days of action, but one of those days will serve as a fan event.

On Oct. 17 in their HBO pay-per-view fight at Madison Square Garden in New York, IBF middleweight champion David Lemieux will look to pull off an upset and take out IBO/WBA middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin. Perhaps Lemieux’s biggest chance to do so is to land with his big power punches, however, ‘GGG,’ thinks that if Lemieux comes in and just tries to use his power, than he’ll probably only last three or four rounds.

It seems like there’s a lot of belt stripping these days, both in MMA and boxing. Well it seems likely that we’ll be adding another name to the list, with boxer Guillermo Rigondeaux, who is the WBA/WBO super bantamweight champion. It’s being reported that Rigondeaux is on the verge of being stripped by the WBO because he has failed to stick to their rules and hasn’t defended his belt in more than 9 months, since his win over Japan’s Hisashi Amagasa on December 31. 2014.

We just saw Bellator MMA go old school and put on a one-night, four-man tournament at their ‘Dynamite’ event and now it looks like WSOF will be upping the ante. WSOF announced a little while ago that they were working on doing a tournament, but after a change in venue no other details had been released, until now.

On Tuesday it was revealed that the big mystery opponent for Fedor Emelianenko’s return fight would be……….a heavyweight no ones knows, with a 1-0 MMA record. As I’m sure you’d expect a lot of fans and fighters were a little disappointed. After all this time of waiting and wondering where and then who he would be fighting, we get this.

Jiu-Jitsu isn’t a sport where you see a lot of deadly injuries. Unlike fighting, boxing and other high impact sports, BJJ doesn’t involve strikes or big throws. However, major injuries do happen and unfortunately Globo is reporting that a 32-year-old jujitsu student in Brazil has died, several days after being choked with a RNC during class. A 32-year jujitsu student died in Brasilia due to a hold known as “rear naked choke” during a class on 21 September in Ceilândia. The family says that Napoleon José Alves was taken to a public hospital for two days straight and did not receive care because the case was not considered serious. A few days later he was treated, but was found brain dead.

Current Bellator MMA welterweight Paul Daley has his eye on gold, but not just MMA gold. The top 170-pound Bellator fighter is at the top of the division and has said before that he wants to win the title before a big rematch with Josh Koscheck takes place. However now he’s added a new goal and wants to fight the GLORY Kickboxing welterweight champion, Nieky ‘The Natural’ Holzken, as well. Pauly most recent scrap was in the GLORY ring, although it was as a Bellator contracted fighter during the special ‘Dynamite’ event. Now Daley wants to challenge the champ in an attempt to possibly hold a belt in both promotions. First step? Get both sides to agree on it.

Boxer Ruslan Provodnikov has gone 1-2 in his last three fights and decided that it was time to make a change. That change came when he parted ways with Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach and brought in Joel Diaz to replace him. Provodnikov has been working with Diaz for two weeks now and the two will stay together as they prepare for his next fight, which is expected to take place sometime this year.

Former UFC fighter Rousimar Palhares was stripped of his World Series of Fighting welterweight title and suspended indefinitely following his most recent fight against Jake Shields. In that fight he repeatedly put his fingers near Shields’ eye and seemed to scratch, or gauge them. Even after the referee warned him he continued to do so. Then, during the fight ending kimura he locked in on Shields, he refused to let go after Shields tapped and the referee tried to pull him away. Palhares has had issues with holding submissions too long in the past and WSOF had seen enough. Now, he waits for his disciplinary hearing with the Nevada State Athletic Commission, which is expected to go down sometime this month. Palhares recently talked to MMAFighting and said that he just hopes the commission treats him fairly.

Fan favorite and flashy striker Michael ‘Venom’ Page now has an opponent locked down for the upcoming Bellator 144 event. It was announce by the promotion that the undefeated fighter will be taking on Charlie Ontiveros. The welterweight scrap will take place at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn., on October 23. The main event for that card will be a bantamweight title fight between Marcos Galvao and Eduardo Dantas.
