Eddie Alvarez blasts “paper champion” Khabib Nurmagomedov

Former UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez (29-5 MMA) was in attendance at last night’s UFC Fight Night 128 event in Atlantic City.

“The Underground King” is currently awaiting his next assignment from UFC officials, this after scoring a thrilling third-round knockout victory over the previously undefeated Justin Gaethje in his most recent octagon appearance at December’s UFC 218 event in Detroit.

Eddie Alvarez caught up with reporters following the conclusion of last night’s main event, where he shared his opinion of current lightweight “paper champion” Khabib Nurmagomedov.

“What’s funny about this whole thing is, Khabib wasn’t a champion,” Alvarez told MMAJunkie. “Now he’s the champion after beating no. 11. Let’s just get that out in the open. He says, ‘paper champion, who’s fake champion, who’s real champion?’ You beat no. 11, and now you’re champion. So think on that. Pray on that during Ramadan. No. 11, and now you’re champion.”

Eddie Alvarez continued:

“When I fought for the title, I literally fought no. 5, 4, 3, 2, then 1. I fought a champion, a guy who was a champion, who had a belt. That’s a real champion. I’ll continue to fight the best, and I’ll wait my turn. I’ll let the UFC do their job, pick who’s next in line, and I’ll be waiting there for all of them.”

Alvarez, who has gone 4-1 with 1 no-contest over his past six fights, recently called out former title challenger Nate Diaz for a fight, this after he beat up “The Stockton Sluggers” friend right in front of him.
