McGregor's Coach says the UFC 196 loss to Nate Diaz was not a result of weight gain

Fans and analysts have been critical of Conor McGregor’s performance at UFC 196, many blaming the “weight gain” for his submission loss to Nate Diaz. McGregor’s strength and conditioning coach John Connor does not believe that the loss had anything to do with Conor’s weight gain and that he was at “peak condition” going in to the bout. His words:

With UFC 200 rapidly approaching, talk of dream fights for the UFC to book for the event are at an all-time high. In the wake of UFC 196, we now know that Conor McGregor will drop back down to featherweight to defend his UFC featherweight championship, however there has been no word yet on whether Jose Aldo or Frankie Edgar will contest for the belt.

This past Saturday, UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor, in an unprecedented move, jumped up 2 weight classes to fight at welterweight. Ultimately, McGregor was submitted by Nate Diaz in the 2nd round of their UFC 196 main event scrap. Immediately following the bout, many critics emerged from the woodwork to criticize McGregor for his confidence leading up to the fight. While seeing memes of yourself all over social media would irritate most people, McGregor isn’t ‘most people’.

Conor McGregor on UFC 196: "It was a heck of a fight"

This past Saturday at UFC 196 Conor McGregor suffered the first loss of his UFC career at the hands of Nate Diaz as he was submitted in the 2nd round of their welterweight scrap. After the bout, McGregor surprised many as he showed nothing but respect for Diaz, and made no excuses for his loss. McGregor continued to remain graceful in defeat on social media Friday evening.

Dana White hinting at potential Conor McGregor vs. Frankie Edgar fight at UFC 200?

In the aftermath of UFC 196, where Conor McGregor was submitted by Nate Diaz in the main event, McGregor revealed that he plans to return to featherweight to defend his UFC championship. In the week following UFC 196, UFC President Dana White visited with McGregor, and it was determined that McGregor would still be fighting at UFC 200 despite the loss to Diaz.

With that being said, there is still much speculation as to who McGregor will fight at the historic event. McGregor has stated that he wants to defend his featherweight championship at UFC 200, however both Jose Aldo and Frankie Edgar have strong cases for deserving a title shot.

This was likely to keep McGregor’s options open based on the outcome of his UFC 196 scrap. Of course as everyone knows by now, Nate Diaz defeated McGregor at UFC 196.

UFC president Dana White was a recent guest on “ESPN Radio: Russillo & Kanell Today” where he announced that current UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor will return to the octagon at UFC 200 this July in Las Vegas. His words: “Yeah I was at his (Conor’s) house last night. He wants to fight again as soon as possible. He wants to jump back in there and he wants to fight again. We are working on who the opponent is going to be.”

At UFC 196 fight fans witnessed Conor McGregor suffer the first loss of his UFC career at the hands of Nate Diaz. Following the fight, McGregor chalked the loss up to an inefficient use of energy, which resulted in him gassing early on in the fight. It’s no secret that McGregor packed on quite a bit of muscle ahead of the fight, which resulted in many questioning whether or not he would be as quick. With Rafael dos Anjos withdrawing from their UFC 196 lightweight title fight, McGregor ended up moving up to welterweight, an extra 15 pounds higher than the lightweight limit of 155 pounds.

It was no secret going into UFC 196 that featherweight champion Conor McGregor was taking a tremendous risk by jumping up to welterweight, 25 pounds higher than the featherweight limit of 145 pounds. McGregor ultimately appeared to gas in the second round, something he chalked up to an inefficient use of energy, which resulted in Diaz rocking McGregor with a 1-2 combination. This subsequently forced McGregor into a desperation takedown attempt, which resulted in Diaz securing a rear naked choke win.
