UFC 189 Results: Cody Garbrandt Out-Strikes Briones, Gets UD Win

In the first fight on the FOX Sports 1 portion of UFC 189, Cody Garbrandt took on Henry Briones.

In the first round Garbrandt and Briones kept it standing. Garbrandt was the aggressor, walking Briones down. Grabrandt locked to counter for the most part. He kept putting his hands up, taunting Briones. They both went for some unusual techniques. Garbrandt with a spinning wheel kick, Briones with uppercut elbows. At the end of the round Garbrandt was able to get the fight to the ground with a solid takedown.

In the second round Garbrandt came out with another spinning cartwheel kick that missed. Both fighters were taunting. Briones landed a nice body kick. During an exchange Garbrandt landed a nice right hand. Moments later he connected again and dropped Briones. He tried to take advantage, but Briones survived and got to his feet. Both men were very patient in the stand up game. Briones face was bloodied up. He did land a nice overhand right at the very end of the round. Garbrandt acknowledged it and smiled.

In the third it was a lot of the same. Both men tried to pick their shots and threw a lot of feints. With about two and a half minutes left the pace picked up a little bit. Garbrandt thew a flying knee that was blocked for the most part. Garbrandt seemed to be landing more often. Briones was keeping pressure on him though. Garbrandt shot in and got a takedown. It didn’t stay down long. With about 10 seconds left Garbrandt went nuts, unloading huge strikes. They both started throwing like wild men until the fight stopped. Good fight, lots of fun striking.

RESULT: Garbrandt wins via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
