Kelvin Gastelum looked like a seasoned veteran in the first round and proved to the world why it wasn’t crazy to label him the favorite walking into the octagon. Rick Story was quick to the center of the octagon and tried to land some shots, but Gastelum did a great job at countering everything Story threw. Gastelum even knocked Story off balance at one point and almost finished the fight on the ground, but Story made it back to his feet.
Positions switched in the second round as Gastelum was the one to take the center of the octagon first. He landed a number of thudding leg kicks and changed levels constantly, attacking the body and head. Story started to build up some offense of his own in the middle of the second round, and once again at the end of the round. Story wobbled Gastelum with a left straight and eventually dropped him with ten seconds left. Gastelum was saved by the horn and that series of events made for an interesting third round.
Story started the third round off strong by continuing to attack the body of Gastelum. Gastelum tried to end the flurry of body shots with a takedown but Story managed to take the back of Gastelum and work for a rear naked choke. They jockeyed for position and Gastelum made it back to his feet with thirty seconds left to go. They continued to duke it out for the remaining thirty seconds with the crowd on their feet.
Both fighters deserve the “Performance of the Night” bonus after their fight tonight. Two judges awarded Kelvin Gastelum the decision victory tonight and he will be walking away with another win to his name.
