Roy Jones Jr: I’m taking a tune-up fight for Anderson Silva

By Chris Taylor - October 23, 2013

Roy Jones Jr. is one of the all-time greats in the sport of boxing, he has won titles in multiple weight classes and was voted ‘boxer of the decade’ for his dominance throughout the 90’s.

Former UFC middleweight champion and MMA great, Anderson “The Spider” Silva, has been very vocal regarding his aspirations to one day have a boxing match with the 43-year-old Jones Jr.

In an interview with boxingnewsonline.com’s John Dennen, Roy stated that wants a tune up fight with cruiserweight Bobby Gunn as a warm-up for “The Spider”:

“If he beats Weidman, then we’ll do a boxing match, which is what he wants to do,” said Jones. “The Gunn fight would give me a tune-up, so I’m ready for the fight in case he beats Weidman. So if he beats Weidman, I’ve got to be ready for it because he’s going to be coming for me and I want to be ready when he comes for me. I want to give him what he wants. He said that’s his lifelong dream. We’ve got to make that happen. He’s a great striker and a great defender.”

Roy Jones Jr. (56-8) is currently on a two-fight win streak, his latest being a decision win over Pawel Glazewski in June of 2012. That said, Jones is in the twilight of his career, winning just seven of his last 13 fights overall.

Meanwhile, Anderson Silva is coming off his first loss since 2006, which he suffered at the hands of Chris Weidman, who knocked-out “The Spider” at UFC 162 this past July in Las Vegas.

The reason for Silva’s desire to box ‘RJJ’ is simple, he has admired Jones for decades, and wants to test his boxing skills.

UFC president Dana White met with Roy Jones Jr. at July’s UFC 162 event in Las Vegas, and apparently was willing to entertain the idea. What do you think the odds of this boxing match happening are? Let’s hear it Penn Nation!
