Liam McGeary vs. Phil Davis Title Fight Expected For Early 2016

By BJPENN.COM News - September 22, 2015

This past Saturday the combat sports world watched as kickboxing and MMA collided at Bellator ‘Dynamite.’

On the MMA side of things we were treated to an old school one-night tournament featuring the best light heavyweights the promotion had to offer. In the opening fights, Phil Davis took out former champ Emanuel Newton and ‘King Mo’ defeated Linton Vassell.

So, the final was supposed to be Mo and Davis, with the winner earning the next title shot. Instead due to a rib injury sustained by Mo in his first fight, we saw Davis vs. the alternate Francis Carmont.

Davis ended up making pretty quick work of Carmont and became the tournament champion.

Later in the main event, champ Liam McGeary forced Tito Ortiz to tap with an inverted triangle, thus defending his title. So now we know that it will be McGeary vs. Davis in the next light heavyweight title fight, but when?

At the post fight press conference Bellator president Scott Coker was asked about the date of the fight and he said that it would likely be something they do early in 2016.

“I think that’s probably a fight we’ll promote sometime in the first quarter of next year, and I think it’s going to be a great matchup. It’s going to be a good battle.”
