Jon Fitch vs. Demian Maia set for UFC 156 in Las Vegas | UFC News

By Chris Taylor - November 15, 2012

UFC officials announced today that a key welterweight match-up between Jon Fitch (24-4-1 MMA, 14-2-1 UFC) and Demian Maia (17-4 MMA, 11-4 UFC) has been added to the UFC 156 event set for February 2nd in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Maia, who is 2-0 since dropping down to welterweight, most recently disposed of Rick Story at this past month’s UFC 153 event. Prior to his submission win over Story, Maia had earned a bizarre TKO victory over Dong Hyun Kim in his welterweight debut at UFC 148.

The BJJ specialist, Maia, went 9-4 while in the UFC’s middleweight division. He even fought for the title at UFC 112, where he suffered a decision loss to middleweight kingpin Anderson Silva.

Meanwhile, Jon Fitch also fought at the UFC 153 event in Brazil, where he earned a hard-fought decision win over rising star Erick Silva in a bout that was deemed UFC 153’s “Fight of the Night.”

The victory at UFC 153 snapped a 2 fight winless streak for Fitch, as he had previously suffered a brutal knockout loss to Johny Hendricks and settled for a draw against B.J. Penn.

UFC 156 takes place February 2nd at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event is headlined by a featherweight title fight between current champ Jose Aldo and former lightweight title holder Frankie Edgar.
