Jon “Bones” Jones to become first Gatorade-sponsored athlete inside the UFC Octagon

By BJPENN.COM News - September 19, 2013

On Saturday night at UFC 165 in Toronto, UFC Light Heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones will become the first mixed martial artist to walk into the UFC octagon sponsored by iconic sports fuel company Gatorade, Jones’ agent Malki Kawa announced today.

The Gatorade logo will be prominently displayed on Jones’ fight shorts as he looks to become the first light heavyweight competitor in UFC history to defend his title six times.

“It’s great that a company like Gatorade sees the value that their products bring to MMA athletes,” Jones said. “They’re one of the biggest brands in sports worldwide, and I am honored to have their support moving forward.”

“It does not get any better than Gatorade when it comes to fueling your body, during training and competition,” Jones added.

“This is a historic day for UFC competitors,” Kawa said. “Gatorade is one of the most recognized brands in the world. Jon has earned this relationship through hard work, determination, and pure dominance inside the octagon.”

Since his arrival on the MMA scene, Jones has proved to be one of the most dominant athletes in the history of the sport, posting a 18-1 record (12-1 UFC), including nine consecutive wins, a UFC light heavyweight record. In 2011, at just 23 years old, he became the youngest champion in UFC history.

With a victory on Saturday, Jones would become the all-time UFC wins leader in the light heavyweight division at 13. He has never been taken down in a fight, and his nine victories by knockout or submission are tied for the most in the UFC’s light heavyweight division.
