Jedrzejczyk: ‘Never Doubt the Underdog, That’s How I Won the Title’

Joanna Jedrzejczyk walked into UFC 185 as the underdog on nearly every bookies’ sportsbook when she challenged Carla Esparza for the UFC Women’s Strawweight Championship. By the time Jedrzejczyk stepped out of the octagon, the championship was slung over her shoulder and the jaws of bettors around the world were on the floor.

Never doubt the underdog.

Jedrzejczyk may be favored in her upcoming bout against Jessica Penne, but Jedrzejczyk knows not to doubt her opponent.

You can be underdog, but you can beat the champion,” Jedrzejczyk told Submission Radio.

“This is what I did last time. And so I have lots of respect to my opponents. Of course me and my trainers, we have some game plans for this fight like for every fight, but you never know what’s gonna happen in the octagon. So you must have a different plan, second by second when you’re in the octagon.”

Jedrzejczyk will be defending her title for the first time this month at UFC Fight Night 69 in Germany. Jedrzejczyk breaks down how she thinks Penne will approach the fight, but ultimately claims she will walk out with the belt.

So Jessica, she’s working very good on the ground, her wrestling is good, but not as good as Carla’s wrestling, but I think she can strike better than Carla and then she will try to take me down. But, we will see. They cannot do it, yeah? I’m gonna stay the champion.”
