Charles Oliveira was stretchered out of the octagon at “UFC Fight Night 74” after his main event fight was forced to stop early.

Oliveira shot for a takedown which Max Holloway easily shrugged off. After Oliveira recovered and made it back to his feet, he clutched his shoulder and neck area and backed up towards the fence. Holloway went in for the kill, but held back when he realized something was seriously wrong. The referee waved off the fight before Holloway could land anything serious.

Oliveira was stretchered out of the octagon and brought to a local hospital where he was ultimately diagnosed with an esophagus tear, MMA Junkie confirmed with several UFC officials Monday afternoon.

After the main event concluded, Tom Wright, UFC’s Managing Director of Operations in Canada, informed the media that Oliveira was recovering in the hospital. “He was alert. He is able to move all his extremities.”

Oliveira has since spoken out about the injury and expressed interest in facing Holloway again in a rematch.

Esophageal tears are rare, but can be extremely dangerous. We here at BJPENN.COM are happy to hear that Oliveira has recovered from last night’s scare and are pulling for him to make a quick and safe comeback to the octagon, regardless of who he faces.
