Cain Velasquez vs. Junior dos Santos Targeted for UFC 166 Main Event in Houston

The third in a trilogy of exciting heavyweight title fights is now targeted for the main event of UFC 166 as heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez (12-1) defends his title for the second time against former UFC heavyweight champion, Junior dos Santos (16-2). Dana White told members of the media during a scrum for UFC 161 earlier today.

UFC 166 is said to be scheduled in October at an unconfirmed Houston, Texas venue.

With each man winning one of their last two bouts, this third will be a tie-breaker but in no way does it mean that this meeting will be the two dominant heavyweight’s last.

#1 contender Junior dos Santos last fought in the co-main event of UFC 160 against Mark Hunt in a brutal fight that ended with a spinning-heel kick in the third that rendered Hunt unconscious and dos Santos a ‘Knockout of the Night’ bonus recipient.

For champion Cain Velasquez, he last occupied the main event slot of UFC 160 and destroyed Antonio ‘Bigfoot’ Silva for the second time, first in a title fight, in 1-minute and 21-seconds.

This will be the fifth consecutive fight card that both men have shared a spot on while UFC on FOX 1 and UFC 155 saw the two pitted against one another.

Now, the last two heavyweight champions will resume their Octagon rivalry for a scheduled 25-minute fight and based on the first two bouts, an accurate prediction for the outcome is far from likely.
