Dana White stomps out talk of a Conor McGregor vs. Anderson Silva fight

By Tom Taylor - February 10, 2019

Former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva has recently expressed interest in a fight with former UFC lightweight and featherweight champion Conor McGregor. Though Conor McGregor would be the much smaller man in the cage in this prospective showdown, he seems up for the matchup too — even calling it an ‘honor.’

Anderson Silva, Conor McGregor

“Anderson is one crafty, crafty Martial Artist,” McGregor wrote after Silva came up short to Israel Adesanya at UC 234 on Saturday night. “You only develop these methods through years of hard fought experience. Phenomenal performance. The crafty veteran. Big respect always. It would be an honor!”

While both Conor McGregor and Anderson Silva seem interested in this blockbuster matchup, however, UFC President Dana White is not.

The UFC boss stomped this discussion out at the UFC 234 post-fight press conference.

“Did he really (say he wants Anderson)?” White said of the McGregor Tweet above (via MMAjunkie). “No, I don’t like that fight at all.”

Despite White’s clear disinterest in this fight, Silva reiterated post-fight that it’s one he’d enjoy being a part of.

“At this point in my career and in Conor’s career, it’s a very interesting doing something special for the fans,” Silva said. “I think a superfight, me and Conor, is very interesting. We’ll see. The future inside the UFC is very interesting because everything changes fast. I’m ready to come back to fight.”

With his loss to Israel Adesanya, Anderson Silva returns to the loss column after a 2017 decision defeat of Derek Brunson.

Conor McGregor, meanwhile, is also riding a loss, having come up short in a lightweight title fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229 in October.
