It was recently revealed both dos Santos and Overeem were removed from the heavyweight ranks. Shortly thereafter, it was reported both men were released from the promotion and they both confirmed the news on their social media.

Junior dos Santos issues statement confirming UFC release

Former UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos issued a statement confirming that he was released by the world’s leading MMA promotion. Dos Santos and his former rival Alistair Overeem were both removed from the UFC rankings on Wednesday, which indicated they were released by the promotion. Not long after word broke on social media that “Cigano” and “Ubereem” were cut, the Brazilian took to his social media to confirm the news. Check out the statement JDS posted on Instagram.

Alistair Overeem and Junior dos Santos have been removed from the UFC heavyweight ranks. With the rankings being updated every Tuesday, fans were waiting to see if any major changes would take place. Although UFC Vegas 20 shouldn’t have changed up much of the ranks, the heavyweight division saw some notable change as Alistair Overeem and Junior dos Santos were removed from the rankings.

Junior dos Santos is not accepting defeat. At UFC 256, dos Santos suffered his fourth-straight loss as he was knocked out by Ciryl Gane in the second round. However, there was some controversy involving the stoppage as the elbow the Frenchman threw was borderline on if it was to the back of the head. For the former champion, he believes it was an illegal shot.

UFC president Dana White discussed the future of Junior dos Santos following his fourth consecutive TKO loss at UFC 256. Dos Santos suffered yet another brutal knockout loss, this time to Ciryl Gane at UFC 256 in the main card PPV opener. After getting outstruck in the first round, dos Santos was nailed with an elbow behind the ear in the second round and knocked out. It’s the fourth straight TKO defeat for the former UFC heavyweight champion after having lost to Jairzinho Rozenstruik, Curtis Blaydes, and Francis Ngannou previously. At age 36, it’s hard to know how much dos Santos has left in the tank after yet another TKO loss.

UFC president Dana White confirmed the UFC is working on a key heavyweight bout between Junior Dos Santos and Ciryl Gane. Gane was originally set to take on UFC newcomer Ante Delija at this Saturday’s UFC Fight Island 6 card, but Delija withdrew from the contest due to contractual issues, leaving Gane without an opponent. Now the UFC is targeting a bigger fight for Gane as White says the UFC is hoping to match him up against JDS. No date for the bout was revealed for the bout, which pits two of the UFC’s top-15 heavyweights against one another.
