UFC superstar Conor McGregor says he could hear Thiago Alves in the corner of Dustin Poirier encouraging him to kick his legs. McGregor was knocked out by Poirier in the second round of their fight with punches, but all those nasty low kicks Poirier landed before the finishing blows contributed to the knockout. The Irishman’s mobility became severely limited from the low kicks and they directly contributed to the win. Poirier, of course, comes from American Top Team, where many fighters utilize leg kicks to great success. One of ATT’s most notorious low kickers was Alves, the former UFC welterweight who is now a coach.

Thiago Alves vs. Phil Baroni and Hector Lombard vs. Kendall Grove are among the new fights added to a Bare Knuckle FC event this fall. BKFC 13 is set to take place on September 19 and the card will feature a pair of high-profile fights on it featuring a foursome of former UFC fighters in Alves, Baroni, Lombard, and Grove. News broke yesterday that Thiago Alves had to pull out of his fight with Mike Perry at UFC Pittsburgh. Originally, the cause was unknown, but it was eventually reported by Ariel Helwani that it was due to complications from Hurricane Irma since Alves is based out of Florida. After hearing this, Perry, who came from Florida himself, isn’t convinced. Luckily someone stepped up to replace Alves, but a heated Mike Perry recently voiced his opinion to Mike Dyce at Fansided about his former opponent’s travel problems. “That’s bullsh-t. I came from Florida, we got more f-cked up than he did. There are so many people here from South Florida. I was just talking to Michael Johnson. His coaches from [American Top Team] down there, are here today. They flew up yesterday when he was supposed to. He is feeding y’all bullsh-t. He don’t want to fight, he doesn’t want to retire yet and I was going to put him to sleep. It’s simple as that. Does he get the opportunity to fight me after I smash [Alex Reyes]? They need to get me a top-10 opponent after this.”

Thiago Alves had to pull out of his fight with Mike Perry according to MMA Fighting. Right now the reasons are undisclosed, however Alves does live in Florida and he and his family could have been affected by the storm. This was something Perry was worried about, so he left a week earlier as a resident of Florida himself. A recent update from Ariel Helwani seems to confirm it was storm related complications. For those wondering about Thiago Alves, I’m told he was stranded due to Irma. Decided against leaving early to stay with his wife and child.

Originally, Alves’ planned lightweight debut was expected to pit him against New York’s Al Iaquinta in the featured Fight Pass prelim of UFC 205. When Iaquinta retired from mixed martial arts to focus on a burgeoning real estate career, however, Alves was forced to shift his focus to a replacement opponent in lightweight veteran Jim Miller.
