UFC 238 | Calvin Kattar ready to show he belongs against Ricardo Lamas

Cole Shelton - June 4, 2019

Calvin Kattar will partake in one of the biggest fights of his career when he takes on Ricardo Lamas at UFC 238. When the 15th-ranked featherweight got the call to fight Lamas he was ecstatic. He understands just what a win would do for his career and is excited to show he is a top featherweight in the world. “I was pumped, man. I’ve been trying to fight a bunch of big names for a while now,” Kattar said to BJPENN.com. “I’m ready to go out and show why I belong. I don’t want to be the 15th-ranked fighter without taking out a top-15 fighter. I want to earn that spot. A win over Lamas shows I belong in that spot and can compete with guys who can fight for the title. He previously fought Aldo, that is more exciting and appealing.”

The former featherweight title challenger will be looking for two-straight wins for the first time since July 2017. Prior to the win over Elkins, Lamas lost a split decision to Mirsad Bektic at UFC 225 and was finished in the first round by Josh Emmett at UFC on FOX 26. The 36-year-old has fought the likes of Jose Aldo, Chad Mendes and Max Holloway during his UFC career. Lamas has only gone the distance once in his last five fights. Currently the Chicago native is ranked #11 in the featherweight division.

Report: Ricardo Lamas gets new opponent for UFC on Fox 26 in Winnipeg

Tom Taylor - November 28, 2017

Originally, long-time UFC featherweight contender Ricardo Lamas was expected to rematch former champion Jose Aldo at UFC on Fox 26, which goes down on December 16 in Winnipeg. When Frankie Edgar was forced out of his UFC 218 featherweight title fight with champ Max Holloway, however, Aldo was pulled from his fight with Lamas, and reassigned as Holloway’s replacement opponent. This, of course, left Lamas without an opponent. After a prolonged stretch with no updates on Lamas’ replacement opponent, it seems as though the UFC has finally found him a new foe. According to ever-reliable MMA insider Farah Hannoun, Lamas is now likely to battle Josh Emmett in Winnipeg.

Ricardo Lamas Thinks He Should Be Fighting Holloway at UFC 218

Justin Golightly - November 18, 2017

Frankie Edgar challenging Max Holloway was a fight everyone wanted to see. The two somehow haven’t fought yet and Edgar — along with Chad Mendes — were perpetually switching out for the second best featherweight in the world next to Jose Aldo. When an injury forced him out of his third chance at the title at UFC 218, the former champ was subbed in for a rematch with Holloway. Cub Swanson was in the running for awhile, but one name missing from the equation was Ricardo Lamas. He opened up about the scenario in a recent interview with Luke Thomas. .@RicardoLamasMMA explains why he should have been in the running for a title shot against Max Holloway#TLTS@lthomasnews pic.twitter.com/Dn6YlvC5dE

Report: Jose Aldo being targeted for a rematch in December

Russell Ess - September 18, 2017

Jose Aldo has dreamed of fighting in New York at Madison Square Garden and was hoping to get on the UFC 217 card taking place there in November. However, it sounds like the former UFC featherweight champion will have to wait a bit longer for his chance to step into the Octagon or perhaps a ring inside the historic New York venue. Combate has reported that Aldo is being targeted to face a familiar foe in Ricardo Lamas sometime in December. With Aldo campaigning to fight at UFC 217 in New York, Lamas’ asked for a bit more time, according to the report. Combate stated that both fighters verbally agreed to the matchup, which could likely take place on December 2 in Detroit at UFC 218, or December 30 in Las Vegas at UFC 219.

Ricardo Lamas to Korean Zombie: "Be careful what you ask for"

bjpenndotcom - March 14, 2017

Earlier this year, ‘The Korean Zombie’ Chan Sung Jung returned to the Octagon following a nearly four year layoff which saw him serve mandatory military service to South Korea and take time away from the Octagon. In his return fight to the Octagon, Jung faced streaking contender Dennis Bermudez in Houston, Texas. Despite being rocked early, Jung fought back to pick up a 1st round KO win, knocking Bermudez out cold with a perfectly placed uppercut.

The Korean Zombie wants to take out "The Bully" next

Tom Taylor - March 14, 2017

In early February, South Korean featherweight Chan Sung Jung – more widely known by his nickname “The Korean Zombie” – made a successful return to action after more than three years on the shelf, delivering a thudding, first-round knockout of the game Dennis Bermudez. With this win, the undead star burst back into the UFC featherweight rankings, where a plethora of exciting matchups await him. A quick bit of research, of course, reveals that many of the UFC’s premier featherweights are currently booked. Jose Aldo and Max Holloway will be fighting for gold at UFC 212 in June. Frankie Edgar will be taking on Yair Rodriguez at UFC 211 in May. Cub Swanson will be busy with Artem Lobov in Nashville on April 22. Jeremy Stephens will have his hands full with Renato Moicano a week before that. Luckily, there is one elite featherweight who is not currently booked, and that featherweight happens to be one that The Korean Zombie would love to fight: Ricardo Lamas.
