Gervonta Davis and Ryan Garcia had a nice night of business over the weekend.

‘Tank’ and ‘KingRy’ collided in the main event of a Showtime pay-per-view on Saturday night. The bout was viewed as one of the biggest boxing matches of the year going in, and it lived up to the hype. In the lightweight showcase, Davis scored an early knockdown in round two.

To his credit, Garcia attempted to fight on. However, a thunderous body shot in the seventh round proved to be the final blow of the night. With the win, Davis improved to 29-0 in his professional career and also handed Garcia the first loss of his boxing journey. However, it’s hard to feel like either lost on Saturday night.

Gervonta Davis and Ryan Garcia’s pay-per-view success

As first reported by the Sports Business Journal, the pay-per-view reportedly hauled in over 1.2 million buys. For comparison, that’s the same exact figure that Canelo Alvarez’s 2018 rematch with Gennadiy Golovkin reached. For an MMA comparison, UFC 207, which was headlined by Ronda Rousey’s return against Amanda Nunes, also did 1.2 million pay-per-view buys.

Furthermore, while the boxing match excelled on pay-per-view, it also did great at the gate. The event reportedly pulled in a whopping 22.8 million dollars for the event. The figure also puts the event in the top-five highest gates in Las Vegas history.  The only matchups above it include Canelo Alvarez’s series with Gennadiy Golovkin and Floyd Mayweather’s outings with Conor McGregor and Manny Pacquiao.

On fight night, Gervonta Davis was asked in the post-fight interview if he was one of the faces of boxing. ‘Tank’ answered in the positive, and given these numbers, it’s hard to argue with him.
