Zahabi on GSP: I Hope In The End He Finds What Makes Him Happy
Last week on Sherdog Radio Network’s “Beatdown” show, Georges St. Pierre’s trainer Firas Zahabi sat down to talk about what he felt may happen with the former welterweight champion what he hoped would come out of his abrupt departure.
When asked about Georges’ interest in fighting, or in other activities, Zahabi said,
“I think the only way Georges could really stay away is if he finds something else of interest to do.”
“I think Georges loves competing. That’s part of him. I think it’s always going to be there, and he needs to find something else or he’ll end up back in martial arts. I hope in the end he finds what makes him happy, whether it’s martial arts or something else, making movies or whatever.”
Lately GSP has not been keeping his other endeavors a secret, usually taking to social media to share pictures of practices, share behind-the-scenes movie excitement, or to show how he’s teaching and continuing to support MMA among youth.
When Zahabi was asked about the things he would like to see for Georges in the future he commented:
“I don’t want him to do like other fighters have done where they retire and they come back and get beat up by some kid. That’s what I don’t want him to do because I really believe you letting these younger generations build their name off you, it’s bad because they’re not that level and you give them your name. I think when you reach a level like Georges, you have to take care of that name and the guy that you allow to fight, it’s a privilege as well.”
Unfortunately, it’s still pretty uncertain what GSP is planning and whether he will make a return to the UFC or to MMA in general. The most we can do as fans and professionals is join with Zahabi in hoping that finds what truly makes him happy and that he continues to be and inspiration to the younger MMA generation.
