WSOF’s Jon Fitch Says He Would Turn Down a Fight With Rousimar Palhares

Former UFC welterweight contender Jon Fitch says that a fight with Rousimar Palhares ‘would be the first time in my career that I turned down a fight.’

Following a 31 second submission victory over Mike Pierce at UFC Fight Night 29, Rousimar Palhares’ life would change forever.  Only not in the way he had hoped.

The Brazilian jiu jitsu specialist secured the leg-lock that won him the fight, but he held onto the hold after multiple taps from his opponent (signaling his submission) and despite the referee’s attempts to pry loose Mike Pierce’s leg.  The incident forced the UFC to release Palhares.  The Brazilian athletic commission suspended him for 120 days.  After all that, the next major MMA company Bellator MMA’s CEO, Bjorn Rebney, said he had no interest in Palhares.

Now, World Series of Fighting welterweight star Jon Fitch took to the media and expressed his discontent with Palhares.

It was a second offense,” Fitch said, referring to a previous incident where Palhares held onto a submission well beyond necessary while fighting Tomasz Drwal.  “Holding ont a submission too long, especially with a joint lock like that.  You’re talking about ending someone’s career potentially.  I think it was the right move (to release him).  I personally wouldn’t accept a fight with him because of those.  One time maybe, but not twice.  I would never even compete against him honestly.  If he’s got that long of a history of holding onto them too long, his career should probably be done because no one should take a fight with him or a grappling match with him for that matter.”

Fitch was then asked what he would do if he were offered a fight against Palhares, assuming the WSOF signed him.

It would be the first time in my career that I turned down a fight.”
