WSOF Execs ‘Disgusted’ With Matt Brown’s Comments On Female Fighters
UFC welterweight Matt Brown continues to find himself in the line of fire today, as promoters from World Series of Fighting (joined by women’s strawweight Alida Gray) chimed in on Brown’s sexist comments on women’s MMA. Brown was quoted as saying that he would only purchase a women’s pay-per-view if they were topless.
“If it’s true, I think it’s disgusting,” said WSOF President Ray Sefo during the conference call, which was focused on WSOF 8, taking place Jan. 18 at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Fla.
“I think every person should respect female fighters, because they do bring the fire. They’re all talented. It really gets to me when people start saying stupid s–t like that.”
Alida Gray, who will be fighting on the WSOF 8 card, also chimed in on Brown’s comments. Although she was a bit more reserved than Sefo.
“We’re fighters, and we’re athletes, and just like any other sport, we work hard for what we do,” Gray said. “He’s entitled to his own opinion, but we’re going to put on a fight, and he’s welcome to tune in if he wants.”
Brown made the polarizing, brash comments on his podcast, titled “Legit Man Sh*t”.
“I always said, ‘I don’t know why they put women in the UFC – now I know why,” Brown said. “If I’m [going] to pay $60 for a pay-per-view to watch women fight, they should at least be topless. How many knockouts do you see in women’s fights?
“It’s not really my thing. I respect what they do, but look, they don’t have the body-type or the power – all that s–t – for knockouts. If you’re not a good grappler in women’s MMA, then you’re behind. It’s no different than the 125[-pound] division of men’s MMA in that they’re just really not built for knockouts.”
Gray then turned her attention to her upcoming opponent on the WSOF 8 card, Jessica Aguilar.
“I’m not going to predict what’s going to happen in the fight against Jessica,” she added. “If I knock her out, great. If I tap her out, that’s also great. I’m just looking for a win.”
WSOF matchmaker Ali Abdel-Aziz couldn’t help himself, and added some parting shots towards Brown.
“I think if Alida hit Matt Brown, she would knock out Matt Brown, too.”
