WSOF 3 Main Card Recap: Josh Burkman Puts Jon Fitch to Sleep in Under A Minute

By JAKE CHASTAIN

| Last night was a success for NBC Sports Network and World Series of Fighting as it’s WSOF 3 event showcased some pretty exciting, entertaining fights. Although the event had to battle through some difficulties with injuries prior to Friday night (June 14th) the main card on NBC Sports Network delivered.

The main card started off with a spectacular fight between lightweights Ryan Cobb and Justin Gaethje. The bout started out quick, shifted, and then ended with a bang. Cobb came out at the start of the fight looking looking like the veteran, sharp and composed, as he stole the first round by capitalizing on the mistakes if Gaethje. He spent most of the round with a body-triangle on the back of Gaethje but was unable to finish the fight from there. That would prove costly as Gaethje closed the scoring gap with an aggressive second round and then eventually ended the fight by blowing out the knee of Cobb with leg-kicks that looked like they could chop down a tree. The comeback victory allowed Justin Gaethje to push his MMA record to 9-0 and remain unbeaten.

The night continued with a grappling war between fellow lightweights Lyle Beerbohm and Jacob Volkmann. Beerbohm constantly pressed the action throughout the fight but his attack was constantly stuffed and countered by the outstanding wrestling prowess of Volkmann. There were a few moments in the fight when the two exchanged strikes but then that quickly changed when the two would again clinch, grapple, and Volkmann would win that battle. The fight ended with Volkmann on the back of Beerbohm with a body-triangle and he would walk away with the unanimous decision victory. Volkmann’s record now stands at 16-4.

And the co-main event of the night did not disappoint either as Steve Carl took on the surging Tyson Steele. Steele came out of the gates throwing several front kicks, push-kicks, and spinning kicks. At first it looked as if Carl was getting frustrated but that quickly changed as he rushed in on Steele and landed a couple nice, crisp, well-placed bombs that rocked Steele momentarily. Steele, in his attempt to wade off the sudden attack by Carl, shot in on a leg, left his neck hanging out high, and Carl quickly spun to Steele’s back and sunk in a rear-naked choke that had Steele tapping out before Carl could even sink any hooks in. Impressive submission victory for Steve Carl over Tyson Steele at 1:32 in the first round to move his record to 20-3. The WSOF welterweight division has a new contender. We’ll see what the promotion decides to give him next.

The main-event and rematch fight between welterweights Jon Fitch and Josh Burkman was explosive and capped off the night with the same bang it started with. Fitch, who is making his first appearance outside of the UFC in many years, met Burkman in the middle of the cage and the two started immediately exchanging bombs. Burkman won that battle by landing three crisp, powerful strikes that dropped Fitch. He immediately resorted to his wrestling instincts and took a shot on Burkman while he tried to regain his senses. Burkman locked onto Fitch’s neck, elevated it while standing, adjusted his position, and then fell to the canvas with a deep guillotine choke. A couple of seconds later Burkman rolled off of his back, let the choke go and walked away, leaving Jon Fitch asleep on the canvas. Goodnight Mr. Fitch. Just 41 seconds into the first round Josh Burkman claimed a submission victory and redemption over Jon Fitch to close out the WSOF 3 event.

This was a great event for the organization and it gave a lot of exposure to many of the talented fighters that it has under its banner. The event was exciting and it will be interesting to see what the company will decide to with the winners of these bouts.
