Would Ben Askren Compete on TUF? He Says ‘Not a Chance’

Still in the limbo known as free agency since Bellator chose not to renew his contract this past summer, Ben Askren had his hopes set on joining the UFC’s ranks.  Does that mean the Bellator welterweight champion would be willing to compete in the UFC’s reality-television series, ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ for a shot at a contract?  According to Askren, absolutely not.

Bellator welterweight champion Ben Askren is, surprisingly, without a job.  When Bellator chose not to renew his contract in the summer, it was expected that he would be picked up by another organization immediately – though Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney made that process somewhat convoluted.  But with UFC President Dana White hesitant to pick up a fighter he often accused of being boring, the undefeated fighter has yet to find a home in any MMA organization.

If his heart is set on fighting for the UFC, Askren does have an option that many others have tried: ‘The Ultimate Fighter.’  The UFC’s hit reality-television series has been a path for fighters to reach the UFC, and in some cases, seasoned veterans have fought their way through the show and into the top of their respective division.

But Ben Askren says that is simply not an option.

Indeed, that would be a rather considerable step down in competition for the undefeated champion of one of the biggest MMA promotions today; and success on the show would not put him much higher on the division rankings.  All in all, the risks far outweight the potential prizes.

But this hypothesis does underline Askren’s current position.  He is an undefeated fighter who has been unable land a fight contract for months.  Some of his fans clamor that he could be the next UFC champion, but without a UFC contract – or any contract for that matter – Askren will only be a question for MMA fans.

Yup, the UFC is skeared that Askren will make their WW’s look like amateurs. Too political, White isn’t handling this one well.

    • Kenny Powers says:

Why would the UFC want a guy that Bellator doesn’t even want, who also has the most boring style in the world and would probly get KO’d in his first fight?

      • Gargoyle Wrestling says:

Dude, those comments tell me you are clueless about his grappling abilities or grappling in general. Askren is the top of the food chain, nobody is even close. That’s why he is not signed. Bellator had NO competition for him and the UFC is scared. Wake Up.

        • brandon says:

You are nuts, askren could never be a ufc champ. He is to totally a one trick pony, he would be extremely lucky if he could even win tuf

        • Kenny Powers says:

He’s great at being one-dimensional, but he’s one of the most boring fighters on the planet and would get smashed in the UFC. Unranked fighters like Lombard & Woodley would murder him. UFC’s not afraid of Ben AssCream.

        • Fizzypop says:

I never comment on these because it’s not really worth it… but my take on the Askren situation is that nobody wants that boring style. It gets bad reviews. People got a horrible taste in their mouth from Jake Shields who doesn’t exactly SUCK on his feet, how can he? He got beat by Woodley but the judges saw fit to give it to him. People don’t like GSP’s style… so many wrestlers that people just don’t like to watch. These organizations need to consider keeping exciting fights as well. NOW all people saying Askren would get dominated and is not good… you have no idea what this game is about. Ben Askren is world class and would dominate your favorite guys. Are they worried about that? Of course they are. My personal angle… I don’t like to watch a guy get pinned down for 5 rounds, but you know what… THAT guy said “you aren;t going anywhere” and the other dude couldn’t do anything about it. That’s octagon control like a mofo. Add in some GnP and then you make it exciting. That’s why Mark Munoz has a job and also why people would rather run into an oncoming train than let Munoz on top of them. Nothing but respect for Ben Askren but… I would much rather see a division full of Martin Kampmann’s.

I think he should. I’d love to see him lay on everyone that he dominates and make it as boring as possible. It would be a great statement. Dana looks like a fool talking about how fighters look scared when they do and say certain things and then he pulls this. He makes the whole organization look scared.

  3. Biden says:

If Dana is smart, he wouldn’t want Askren on TUF bc most MMA fans enjoy fights. That’s what it is supposed to be, not a guy hugging another guy as tight as he can, putting his enormous chin in another guy’s eye, spooning or riding his opponent like a horse. I don’t know about some people but I’d be embarrassed to even call that a fight if someone else came into the room and asked me what I was watching. The ratings would drop faster than a drunk picking a fight with Bas Rutten.

  4. Dddddddddd says:

I’ll be the first to admit Ben had some super boring fights but if you say his last two were boring you didn’t give him a chance. As much as I’m behind American wrestling I hate a wrestler with no tenacity and that’s what he’s getting away from. This guy has a tremendous coach in duke and the exact sparring partners it takes to reach the caliber everyone wants out of a current fighter. He was twice as exciting in his last two outings as Georges. This guy is also partly responsible for the recent wrestling progress in Pettis. This dude has a lot to offer the progress of MMA. When’s the last time Georges tkoed somebody ?

  5. The Way Of The Dutchman says:

DW has a business to run and Askren doesn’t sell PPV’s. Nobody wants to see a man hump another man for 15 minutes. Why he’s wearing a muay thai short is a mystery cause he has no striking skills whatsoever.

  6. Blake says:

I think he should do ultimate fighter. Dana doesn’t want him so he needs to make Dana want him
