With Overeem's Future In Limbo, Frank Mir Requests Title Shot, Wants JDS Fight

With the news today that Alistair Overeem failed his “A” sample pre-fight drug test for UFC 146, heavyweight contender Frank Mir has commented on the rumors swirling regarding the UFC’s next steps regarding UFC 146.
“I would be excited if given the opportunity to compete for the UFC’s heavyweight title at UFC 146 if the reports released earlier today regarding Alistair Overeem failing his ‘A’ sample drug test are true.”
“I have been fortunate to be able to fight in the UFC for more than a decade, and it is a dream of mine to become the first three-time heavyweight champion in the UFC. Being able to fight Junior Dos Santos would put me one step closer to that dream,” Mir added.
Mir’s next fight is scheduled for May 26 at UFC 146 against former heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez.
Mir is 16-5 in his MMA career, with 14 of those wins coming in the UFC. Known for his ability to submit his opponents, power and athletic ability, Mir has only had three fights decided by a decision, all of which he won.
He has won four of his last five fights and seven of his last nine. In his last fight on December 10, he submitted Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in the first round.
The 32 year-old Las Vegas native trains in his hometown at Xtreme Couture. He began training in martial arts under his father, Frank, Sr.. who was a police officer and Kenpo Karate master. He currently holds black belts in both Kenpo Karate and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

mir is awesome however JDS will rip his jaw off with that overhand and jds BJJ would counter rip his limbs off too
dont think mir could win against JDS
yep – they should just give cain a rematch, even though he doesn’t quite deserve it yet. he is probably the most well rounded heavy weight out there and he simply got caught the first time.
if JDS beats cain again, then it would prove it was not a fluke, and make the first knockout in 64 seconds look even better in the books.
I disagree. I think Frank Mir has been in the game much longer than JDS and Velasquez. He would be just fine. Frank mir is a very good striker….I personally have attended a seminar of his. He brings a very creative and hard to beat variety of strikes to the table.
I like Mir a lot, but the truth is the truth… I think he has a Glass Jaw and JDS hits mad hard. I would love to see a tap if it goes to the ground and Mir takes the Belt, then a rematch of JDS vs Cain would be interesting.
Glass jaw? He gets knocked out my carwin, and rocked by nog, and he has a glass jaw? what do you know? carwin is ****ing huge dude, and he took about 6 of his heaviest shots before going to the mat, and took some more, thats not a glass jaw. and nog is real good at boxing, explain to me how he has a glass jaw.
give mir a shot, he has won a few in a row..yeah they wernt impressive wins..but he got da job done. mir vs dos santos for ufc 146
Tapping out Big Nog is one of the most impressive fets anyone could ever accomplish in MMA.
agreed
Breaking Big Nogs arm wasn’t impressive?!… come on bro give your head a shake.
The finish was extremely impressive. His overall performance wasn’t. He seemed sloppy and sluggish. It’s one of those weird fights where I can say he was losing until he won
In all fairness Big Nog was spankin Mir until he got caught in that armbar, especially when there was no reason for Nog to engage on the ground.JR smashes Mir Period!
YOUR OUTTA YOU ****IN ELEMENT DONNY….LOL.J/K
arm bar?
F**K YOU MAGOO… haha, I don’t disagree with you there, he was getting shit kicked before the sub but you have to admit that was a very impressive come back.
watching big Nogs arm break was pretty f_cking EPIC.
I didn’t see that coming, and spit beer all over my skinny jeans BRO.kidding.
But in all seriousness, watching an Limb get broken is pretty damn impressive.
I hear you man.
They weren’t impressive wins?? Do you even watch UFC you ****ing moron??? He knocked out crop cop, chocked out Kongo, and nearly ripped nogueria’s arms off… dumb shit.
The Cro Cop fight was damn close, with I think a slight edge going to Cro Cop until that KO. Mir has gotten it dumb but he hasnt been running rough shot
I’m sure dos santos would love to get some revenge on mir for what he did to big nog.. junior would snype mirs head off of his shoulders.
3 time? intrem title dont count
The interm title 100% counts. He beat one of the best heavyweights of all time to get it, too. I think it counts.
According to the UFC encyclopedia it does count. Even Shane Carwin is listed as a champ in the book.
HUNT VS JDS, MAKE IT HAPPEN.
**** yes mate. Crazy fight!
Hunt vs JDS. Crazy fight.
Hunt?!… what makes you think he deserves a shot. Sure he’s won his last three fights but look who they were, Tuchscherer, Rothwell and Kongo… shit even McCorkle beat him in his first UFC fight. IMO Hunt has not proven himself yet but he’s on his way if he can take out Struve which is another reason why he won’t be a replacement because he’s already on that card.
He may not deserve it but hey, that would still be a sick ass fight! Wishful thinking i guess.
I love Mir, I just think that he’s going to get Knocked clean out.
No matter what you think about Mir personally, he is a warrior who has never, and will never shy away from a tough fight.
He has more balls than chin!
IF Overeem gets suspended, ithink Mir should get the shot! He is 7-9 of his last fights, now has 3 in row.. All by either KO or Submission with 1 decision and that was against Roy Nelson.. Even JDS went to decision with Roy Nelson.. He well deserves a shot if overeem cant cause there is no other HW on a win streak right now and Cain hasnt even fought yet.. So i think this is how the card should look like if it changes:
JDS vs. Mir
Cain vs. Antonio Silva
Hunt vs. Nelson (see who can KO who)
*And Stevan Struve just gets cut unless Travis Browne doesnt get hurt and can fight at 146
Also atleast this happened now and not right before the fight!
title says it all i think he would take him down grapple with him a little then submit him
Travis Brown already had that match with Stevan Struve
That is true, forgot he KO’d Struve.. But they could figure something out with Browne or even bring in Werdum..
I reckon give Mir the shot if Overeem doen’t get his licence.
give werdum the title shot.
**** mirr, give Cain the rematch he has only lost once in the ufc. Mirr has got his ass kicked to Brandon Vera.
Mir knows kenpo? awesome, I didnt know that.
HUNT VS JDS.
Mir is the likely choice since Cain lost decisively and that was both his and JDS’ last fight – though I would love to see Mir vs Werdum.
I think mir will get ko’ed but he deserves it over anybody else right now just off the fact everybody else has a L against jds and he is on a win streak
HA, Frank Mir always think he is deserving. Even if he is, Anyone remember what Carwin did to him? JDS x50000
Mir doesn’t train out of Xtreme Couture, he trains out of his own gym *Suffer* with Robert Drysdale and company. Just sayin…
Someone’s gotta fight JDS, either Mir or Cain. I was really looking forward to JDS vs Reem too, it looked like such a good match up on paper.
Style wise Mir vs Dos santos is the best fight the ufc can make imo it would be a great fight!
Put Mir on the main event vs JDS. he’s definitely an underdog but as long as he can take it to the ground, he still has a chance to win. Oh, and Overroid, you’re a f*cking thief. Trying to rob those fighters who really work their asses hard.
Who other than Mir TRULY ……..DESERVES……… a title shot besides Frank whatever the outcome may be he DESERVES it plain and simple!!!!
cain or frank str8 up no1 else deserves it more!!!!! BUT FORSURE ITS A ****ED SITUATION
Give hunt the title shot
Mir said ” Being able to fight Junior Dos Santos would put me one step closer to that dream,” More like fighting JDS will end with you getting put to sleep long enough TO dream.
Glass jaw mir, yawn. JDS has ground game so even there. Mir has been rocked or ko’d by soooo many heavyweights it’s ridiculous.
give him fedor mir and cain should still fight sign fedor dana i know people will say he cant just come in and get a title shot but everyone wants to see the cain mir fight dont **** up the card just do this fight jds vs fedorm
They should have Mir fight JDS and Werdum fight Cain. Just scrap Werdum’s fight with Mike Russow at UFC 147.
Give Frank Mir the slot. It will be awesome.
I wanted to see mir vs. Werdum anyways! But give mir this shot!
Mir will get ktfo by JDS
If Ubereem can’t fight then book it.
Mir is the best choice and JDS is ready to fight, so why not?
Cain just lost,
Werdum needs another win (his words) and is 1-1 in last 2
Brock is retired
Carwin lost 2 in a row if he is still even fighting
Hunt could be close if he beats Struve and then beats a top contender
Bigfoot is a win or two away
Mir sucks. Jds will make him his bitch
-PLEASE GIVE THIS FIGHT TO MIR. I LOVE WATCHING HIS SUBMISSIONS !!! (Not that I think he could submit JDS)
Mir tapped nog, he can tap anyone
GIVE IT TO MIR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HE DESERVES IT MORE THAN ANYONE I MEAN LOOK AT WHAT HE HAS DONE FOR THE SPORT
You that statement is a joke. Much like his picture on this article. If anyone deserves a title shot, that would be Nelson or Velasquez.
