White thinks Diaz Should Have Been Penalized Against GSP | UFC NEWS
Nick Diaz usually taunts his fighting opponents in between rounds. To tease his opponents and attempt to lure them into attacking is his style. But at UFC 158: St-Pierre vs. Diaz this past Saturday in Montreal, UFC President Dana White thought he should have been penalized for taking it too far when he lost to UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre. St-Pierre defended his belt in a one-sided unanimous decision victory.
Diaz tried to get into the head of St-Pierre throughout the fight and get him into a scuffle. He shoved the champion after the bell ended at the first round and took a swing at him after the third round ended as well. Referee Yves Lavigne prevented the punch from landing.
At the UFC 158 post-fight press conference, White said he thought that a point should have been deducted from Diaz.
“In my opinion, the ref should have taken a point away right there. That wasn’t like, oops, I didn’t hear the bell. It was intentional and it should have been a point,” White said at post-fight press conference.
Diaz denied that he tried to hit St-Pierre after the bell.
“I didn’t really try to take that shot. I just threw it across his face. I know it sounds like some (expletive), but I really wasn’t going to hit him with that. I was just being really mean out there because I wanted him to try to hurt me, try to finish me,” Diaz said at the post-fight press conference.
