Weidman Turned Down Belfort Fight In Hopes Of Silva Booking | UFC NEWS

“From what I am being told, it is a fight that the UFC would want to make happen. Now, it is just confusing. I don’t know what is going on. I am waiting to find out from Dana White. I didn’t take a couple of fights from people challenging me, like (Vitor) Belfort, so I could take the Silva fight. But, now it is all up in the air. I don’t know what is going on… I don’t have any deadlines, but I am young and I want to make the most of my career. I have a lot of respect for the guy, I think he is the greatest of all time and I look up to him. I think I am the biggest challenge to him and I think his camp knows that and I think he should challenge me… Hey man (addressing Anderson Silva), just give me a chance. Obviously I think I am going to beat you and it is a tough one for me to tell you to do. You had one fight when you got the chance, so just give me my opportunity, just give me the fight.”

While being interviews by Ariel Helwani for FUEL TV’s UFC Tonight, top UFC middleweight contender Chris Weidman explains where he is at in his title hunt and pleads to the champ, Anderson Silva to give him a chance at the title.

Can Weidman dethrone the king?

Who is this dude? You honestly think you deserve a shot already? Your talented but not that talented. Two fights more maybe one if Bisping etc. Everyone do callouts now or what?

    • GRT 3000 says:

He’s calling out Anderson based on an impressive showing against a fat rusty Munoz…he’s not taking any other challenges b/c he knows it might mean his ass and any chance he might have at the title. If this guy believes he’s number one than he should frickin’ prove it by fighting Belfort, Sonnen, Bisping, and Okami. Anderson had to smoke all of those dudes and they are all still in contention. This guy decisions Maia and has a good fight against Munoz and now he thinks he’s the best…?! pffft, give you’re head a shake guy and start taking fights that PROVE you’re ready.

      • Brend0magic says:

Anderson fought all those dudes while he’s been champion. Before that, he had 1 ufc fight against Chris fucking Leben, then got a title shot. Argument doesn’t hold up.

        • Tapitout21 says:

Anderson came in with hype surrounding him from being a Champ in previous organizations Weidman is a nobody who hasn’t earned it. It’s not on Silva to give him his opportunity it’s on him to earn it in the eyes of the UFC

      • Jc says:

Anderson got a title shot from an impressive fight over leban so shut the fuck up cunt

  2. Bd says:

For real … Call out Bisping or sonnen then maybe Anderson ..

  3. hellawaits says:

was a totally diferent time in mma when anderson with one match in the ufc challenge for the championship, now you have to prove you more, now he is in the same position evans was when he not take a fight and wait for shogun, and then lose his chance, you need want more fight, weidman name is not gonna sale good, and anderson wants big money fights now with everyman who is not jones

    • Dee says:

Silva was already a big draw before he came to the UFC. Dana went looking for him not the other way around. He was notorious for his knockouts. He may have had one fight in the UFC but he had over 28 fights by the time he came to the organization, so Weidman’s argument is completely dismissed.

  4. bunkylomax says:

Anderson was already a champion in other promotions and relevant in the MMA community..he came to the UFC with a rep..only noobs cry foul on the he only had one win argument. Anderson smashed Leben at that

    • T.R.U. says:

I agree 100% Anderson came in from Pride as a known monster and got put up against what UFC considered a rising prospect for contendership in Leben at the time and Silva KO’d the “knockout artist” in like 15 seconds without Leben landing a single punch on him. That’s impressive. Not lay n praying 4 mediocre middleweights and KOing Munoz after shoulder surgery and an obvious weight gain/muscle loss. If Weidman beat even one more top fighter impressively like Belfort, Bisping, Stann, or Belcher than I could see his arguement but for now he needs to stop whining and take fights he’s not in the position to turn down any fights imo.

  5. Xaninho says:

No no no, Weidman didn’t take the Belfort fight because a loss against Belfort would send him back to the end of the line. He thinks he is the #1 contender after barely beating Maia by split decision and Munoz who just came back after a lay-off due to an elbowsurgery. Munoz was pudgy and out of shape, that’s not good measure to see where he should be ranked.

Let him fight a real contender, not just coming back after a surgery or anything like that. A real challenge to show he deserves the #1 spot. Because so far he has only beaten a couple of nobodies.

  6. Me says:

In my opinion Weidman makes the most sence to fight Anderson he is 5 – 0 in the UFC 9 – 0 in MMA and has beaten 2 top 10 guys there’s no one in the MW division that’s deserves a titleshot more then him. However it seems as if Anderson wants big fights this tells me that he is going to retire in a few fights, Let Weidman fight some other guys give Anderson what he wants he deserves it maybe Vitor if he can beat Belcher, GSP if he can beat Condit or even give him Rashad he is the biggest non champion PPV draw. I do hope we get some answers about what’s happening with the MW division soon.

    • BiggoTrav says:

I must disagree. I think Bisping and Stann stand head and shoulders about Weidman in the title picture. Both men where on there own title march until they were derailed by Sonnen who went on to fight for the championship. Losing to the number one contender should never put you farther back then directly behind him. I think the Stann/Bisping fight will reveal the rightful number 1 contender. Let Weidman fight the losing guy and see what that does for his career.

      • Calvin says:

Also both are MAJOR DRAWS compared to weidman what sounds like a big draw Anderson Silva vs a U.S. Marine hell even a hero with serious knockout power. Anderson Silva vs Michael Bisping a great person to boo who everyone loves to see lose (i personally dont) and a man who Chael Sonnen could not even keep on the ground. or last Chris Weidman undefeated in his mma career coming off the biggest win of his career in mark munoz coming off an injury and layoff. Shit Cain Velasquez is in the title picture at heavyweight cuz when he lost the title he had an injury no matter what injury will always be brought up

      • Me says:

I respect your opinion but I believe if you loose to the #1 contender who goes on to lose to the champion it should set you back. Sure Stann dismantled Alessio but he isn’t even a top 25 MW. But I believe the winner of Stann/Bisping should go on to fight Boetsch he is being so overlooked in the division at the moment.

        • BiggoTrav says:

Ok, then how about this; It’s only August, and Silva is expected to be out for the remainder of the year… how bout Weidman fights Boetsch and that winner fights the winner of Bisping/Stann for number one contender spot. That would reveal who is willing to put in some hard work in camp for the title shot! It’s not a lot of time, but it could be done if nobody takes a serious injury and has to back out!

Of course this is all blowing smoke, Dana White and Joe Silva have been known to throw together title matches that I never thought were deserved. I guess that’s just why my paycheck doesn’t look anything like theirs 😉

        • Me says:

I was thinking that but that isn’t really fair on the winner of Vitor/Belcher I believe the winner should be fighting for the title or atleast a #1 contender match. Ahh the MW division is a mess at the moment.
Maybe who ever looks most impressive between Stann/Bisping, Vitor/Belcher fights time Boetsch the winner gets Anderson

      • Kingron84 says:

I am not sure if Stann should be ahead of him sure his only loss was 2 Sonnen but he was also Sonnens first finish in like 6 years.

  7. Jeff says:

Why get knocked out by Vitor when you can get knocked out by Anderson!

  8. Nick says:

God, he’s a broken record. Shut the fuck up and take another fight. Anderson isn’t fighting until next year, don’t take time off. Find a new fight. This shit is getting old. Tired of hearing him call out Anderson.

  9. magoo says:

Weidman will beat Silva convincingly, and Anderson and soreass know this!

    • GRT 3000 says:

you’re a genius magoo. The Silva camp is scared once again right?! It must be tough being the GOAT and scared all the time, how does he sleep? Look into your crystal ball and tell me that. I’m guessing the only thing you’ll see is a fish eye reflection of yourself – primo Silva hater. Anderson would fuckin stomp Weidman and this noob hasn’t proved to anyone that he deserves a shot. Turning down fights…pffft, who does this guy think he is?! Vitor would stomp Weidman and he and his manager know this. & what did Silva do to Vitor?! made him the poster boy for an ass whipping all across the globe. next!

      • magoo says:

We don’t need a crystal ball grt 3000,we just need AS to sign the dotted line Weidman is a fukcn beast, and unlike Chael you better pray this man doesn’t take you down and gets on top of you his ground assault is brutal as well as his jitz, so you can say whatever you want IMO this kids definitely has what it takes to finish who you call the goat. Drop me a line after the fight, when the whole world knows who Dennis Weidman is!

  10. 123 says:

beating mark munoz gets you into title contention, but not a title shot. a win over sum1 like rashad evans on his middleweight debut most probably would though.

  11. Dee says:

I think he needs to fire his agent, manager, or whoever gave him the wrong advice to wait for Silva. What makes him or anyone else think that he should jump in front of Bisping, Belfort, or Belcher for a title shot. He just started fighting. He turned down a high profile fight, which not only could have made him some money, but would have made him known to a broader audience. He deserve to be thrown to the very back. I hope the UFC puts an end to fighters trying to cut in front of everyone just to get a title shot. You have to earn it like Chuck Liddell did.

  12. jbeamazing says:

Ed Soares and anderson are fucking lame how can you duck the number on contender and to you retards that don’t know Mark was rated number 3 in the world and sonnen was number 2 and has had 2 shots and chris took the number 3 guy in the world and made him look like the number 30 guy in the world and the champ wants nothing to do with him ………………………………………………………………… must be because …………..o yeah anderson picks his fights like he is Money May’s scared ass

    • Chris says:

Just because Munoz was ranked at 3 doesn’t mean he deserved it, just like Weidman doesn’t deserve a title shot yet. Even if Munoz had destroyed Weidman, I still wouldn’t support him getting a title shot.

  13. DMAC says:

Chris you don’t have any match ups and no one is feeling the idea of you fighting for the belt after beating Munoz of all 85ers. Extremely talented but honestly Silva you do you so dirty it will damage your career.. Get another spectacular win then holler at the champ.

  14. A. Spider says:

weidman take the victor fight its your only hopes to maybe get a shot against the G.o.a.t

  15. stephen riddle says:

I hope he never gets this fight in a couple years we wont remember anything but another that got ran threw by silva.

  16. The_Chef says:

this kid weidman should study and learn his MMA history…anderson got that title shot right away because he was already a well known fighter all over the MMA world at the time even before he came to the UFC.

  17. mik says:

  18. mik says:

weidman is a fucking baby change your huggies

  19. ballsackface says:

I reword what he said to what he actually meant and shorten it at the same time

“i assumed cos a few people close to me are hyping me up that i was the next in line to fight anderson. a few people have challenged me that are more deserving of that shot but i turned them down based on my own assumptions. Now dana has turned round and said “are you smoking crack fool” now i dont know what to do as ive been out of action and anderson doesnt want to fight for a while as hes resting. ho hum”

  20. Shawn says:

Weidman, you were very young when Silva started fighting. He didn’t get that ‘ONE’ fight. He had a lot of fights before getting a title shot in other organizations. Coming into the UFC, most people didn’t know who he was. But the few that did, wasn’t surprised that his second UFC fight was a title shot. And we also weren’t surprised he won. EARN your title shot. Time to fight the next level of fighters to prove you can hang with Silva. Belfort, Sonnen, Henderson, even Franklin, Stan, and Bisping. You have plenty to really prove yourself.

  21. Jdiddy3844 says:

I really like weidman alot. But that being said he wasnt talking so much! Munoz WAS considered a number at the time! But i truely think he should face a few more title contenders! Especially a man like belfort! Before all this talk bout a level like silva! The man is very talented and young an see hin very sucessfull but has a little bit more to prove to us real heavy fans! Silva was extremely known world wide before UFC like a guy posted! But so many UFC fans are just UFC fans and no not to much about other global organizations! Most only no of pride bcuz UFC bought it out! UFC fans are not True MMA fans! Sorry but thats the truth and u real fans no what im saying completely! I think weidman could go far but im not fully convinced he could do to silva what everyone else said or thought they could do to the man! I dislike silva but he holds the crown to the middle weight division by EXTREME FORCE!!! And proves its his every time so i cant talk against him! But boy do i wish i could!!!

  22. CombatRusse says:

Turning down the Belfort fight was a wrong move.
A win would have granted him the number one contender spot
and a loss would have brought him back to reality

  23. derp says:

agreed to most. silva got his title shot after being in the UFC for one fight for many reasons. times were different back then, he had a legit rep with many fights under his belt, and he also destoryed leben in 45 seconds who had never been stopped before in his career. any of you know leben, the dude dont get put away easily via on the feet. i really cant understand how a bar fight with demian maia and a stoppage of mark munoz who sucks ass anyways warrants a title shot.

  24. Aldo Raine says:

As usual does a shitty job reporting the news. Weidman did not turn down Belfort, he was never offered Belfort. Just like Silva never turned down Weidman, fans make these matches in there head and when fighters have other ideas they “turned down the fight”. Guarantee if the UFC put paperwork down in front of Weidman for anyone at middleweight he would sign it. No contract offered then there was never a fight to turn down.

    • Dee says:

You’re wrong. I read his quote from another source where he clearly stated that he did not want to fight Vitor. He wanted a direct title shot. He felt that he was 1st in line. It was quoted in an another source. This was after Vitor called him out on twitter before the Belcher fight was made.

  25. killa kill says:

    weidman vs belcher
