Weidman: I’m Confident I Can Beat Silva

“I think what just got people going is my confidence. I’m not going to take that back, because I truly am confident. There should be no reason that I’m fighting if I wasn’t confident. I have a lot of respect for Anderson Silva, but I’m confident I can beat him—and I think that’s what gets people all up in arms, because they can’t believe that I would have the disrespect to think that I could beat Anderson Silva. I earned this opportunity and I’m going to go in there and make the best of it.”

“I think a lot of these guys show too much respect and fear and just kind of wanted to see how they would do against Anderson. This is everything for me. This is a life changer. This is life changing for my family and I’m not going in there to play games or to give him too much respect. I’d be taking away from myself and my family. I’m not going to go in there and letting them down.”

“It hasn’t just been a year I’ve been mentally prepared for this fight. It’s been since the day I decided to do MMA, I began to mentally prepare for this matchup. Because Anderson Silva was the champion in my weight class, and when I got into this the only reason I was going to do it was to be champion, to be the best. From that day I’ve had to condition myself for fighting Anderson Silva and beating Anderson Silva.”

Will having confidence in himself be enough to get Chris Weidman through a fight with P4P kingpin, Anderson Silva?

The way he tells it to Bleacher Report in this interview, going out there and winning is just a formality.

You Sir are gonna get toy’d with then knocked out.. Anderson already knows what you wanna do even before you know it..

  2. Big J says:

I like Chris’ philosophy, he is going into the match confident.
Majority of the fighters against Silva lose the mental battle before stepping in the octagon, by thinking they aren’t on the same level.

  3. Big Daddy says:

Where does Widemouth get his weed?

  4. Ddddddd says:

I’m not sure what people want him to say or feel but that was what I’d expect any professional to say.

  5. KIDD433 says:

Will see how confident he is when that cage door closes and its just him and Silva

  6. The Way Of The Dutchman says:

Of course it’s normal when a fighter says he’s confident and he will win the fight. Nobody is going to say he’s going to lose and other than Chael I think every fighter truly believes he can win.

The thing about Weidman though…He’s constantly repeating it. And when he says it he doesn’t sound confident at all. It’s more like he’s trying to convince himself he has nothing to worry about.

this guy is frickin’ spooked man. I agree, his comments are self affirmations that he can hang with the GOAT. not good.

I think Weidman has a chance. I’m also an optimistic person! I love Silva, but I’ve always wanted to see who could go toe to toe with him, and ultimately beat him. Will Weidman be that person? He has the confidence, but is he too slow for Silva? If Weidman can get Silva to the ground, and that is a big if, I believe he could do some damage. I look forward to finding out and seeing a great three round fight July 6th. (did you guys laugh when I wrote “three round fight” too?)

  9. Steve says:

I think Weidman has a chance at this fight. Chael Sonnen beat Anderson 5 out of 7 rounds? By putting Anderson on his back (not doing a ton of damage) and scoring. Chael in the second fight started the same as he did in the first by taking him down, he made a huge and dumb mistake by doing the spinning backfist and missing (which was the beginning of the end for him). Weidman is an all American wrestler, I think he will do the same as Sonnen did and I think he will have success. I hope he does but if not hopefully its atleast a good fight! :)
