Weidman Believes He Could Submit Anderson Silva And Dana Admits He Was Blown Away With Weidman’s Performance | UFC News

By Jamie McAllister
Chris Weidman faced Mark Munoz at UFC on Fuel 4 and Munoz had planned to get the win and call out Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva. However things don’t always go to plan.

Weidman started out in the first round taking Munoz down with ease and controlling the fight on the floor with a few near submissions. The second round started in similar fashion before Munoz managed to scramble back to his feet. Munoz was attacking aggressively with little success and Weidman hit him with a perfectly timed elbow knocking him down and following up with vicious ground and pound.

At the post-fight press conference Weidman revealed he believed he could control the fight from the start.

“I did believe I could come in here and dominate the fight,”

Weidman also stated before the fight he wanted to show that he was ahead of the pack and make a statement before calling out Anderson Silva.

“A lot of people were asking me before the fight if I deserved the title, and I said, ‘I didn’t want to be one of those guys just calling out Anderson Silva.’ I mean, there’s six of those guys doing it right now and now I’m that guy too. I said I want to make a statement in this fight and I want to make it blatantly obvious that I’m ahead of the pack.”

Weidman is aware of Anderson Silva’s achievements and skills however he feels he could follow the Sonnen blueprint and submit the Champion.

“I don’t want to be that guy who says it’ll be an easy fight after watching Chael do what he does because Anderson Silva’s been through 15 guys. All those 15 guys tried to take him down, hold him down, and try to submit him.”

“Chael Sonnen is that good where he was able to get him down every single fight and hold him down and be good in that position. So I’ll follow that blueprint. I got the length with Anderson Silva too, so he’s not going to be able to play outside too much on me. As soon as he comes in my takedowns are pretty good, I’ll get him down and I really do believe can submit him and finish him.”

UFC President Dana White also commented on Weidman’s performance and admits he was blown away.

“I’m as blown away as anybody,” White said on Fuel TV’s post-fight show. “He looked incredible tonight. Literally dominated Mark Munoz through the entire fight.”

chris does not deserve a title fight…chael should show him he aint worthy of a title fight…

    • danielrchargers says:

Chael praised the fuck out of him. try watching the post fight Fuel TV show, he literally said im passing the torch, and there is no doubt wideman is the #1 contender.
      is what chael said.

  2. Thurgood Jenkins says:

Leading up to this, I was watching his interviews and listening to the talk about wanting Silva. The announcers were talking about how the winner should get the next shot. And I kept thinking why should Weidman get a shot. He beat Meia, a former title contender and probably top ten guy, but did it in very unimpressive fashion. After tonight though, I think he may give the champ a fight. That was as dominant a performance as I have seen in quite a while.

  3. Eric Oka says:

yea i never wouldve thought he’d completely dominate munoz.. that fight says a lot, but i’d like to see him fight another contender before silva. im confident silva would dismantle weidman.

  4. Dave says:

Stick him in with chael, he’s been the closest to beating Anderson and he had a close one with bisping… Then if he beats chael he deserves the title shot.. If he loses convincingly then he’s no further ahead of the pack than bisping or any of the other guys…

  5. Fail Sonnen says:

Personally I’d like to see winner of Lombard Vs. Boetsch fight Weidman for the chance to get destroyed by Silva. I’d also like to say from a personal stand point I realize there are people that are due their shot but I’m sick of watching Silva have to fight ground guy after ground guy. I’d rather see him fight a striker for a more entertaining fight.

  6. Wrestler66 says:

Weidman is a serious threat we have seen really strong combos for example (boxer/wrestler) (Thai / BJJ) but Weidman has awesome Wrestling and BJJ as well as developing fast on the feet hes a threat to anyone !

    • WrestlingRules says:

I agree completely, This guy has all the tools and really good at the transitions. Wow….I’d like to see more gnp then the juijitsu stuff, but hey whatever. His gnp may not be very good. Weidman had him in full mount and kept trying the juijitsu shit. At full mount you drop elbows and fists..Come on.. Set him up with Bisping then Lombard, then Silvia.

  7. Gabi says:

Really submit Silva. Yea I think not. Sure anyone can get caught by pure chance but out of doing it because that is his plan umm no. Good fighter but that’s out there in far left field.

  8. Tapitout21 says:

All fine and dandy to say when you know you are not going to get the next shot at silva, Didnt people learn he’s not a guy to call out just get your fight with him and stfu while you train and hope for a miracle in the cage

  9. Hjortur Halldorsson says:

This guy was unbelievable last night. I did not expect this, I was sure that Munoz would win and then be the next to fight Silva.

I would like to see Weidman next against Bisping as a title contender fight. Bisping has a strong fan base and they are always talking about how Bisping deserves a shot and what not. So let’s see if he would be able to beat Weidman. If you ask me there’s no way Bisping could beat Weidman. His wrestling combined with his jiu jitsu is a deadly combo. Weidman is only a purple belt and has just been training jiu jitsu for a few years according to the great Wikipedia. It’s safe to say that this guy is fantastic talent. But I would like to see him against one more top fighter before he’s thrown in with Silva. Phil Davis is a good example of very talented fighter who was thrown in with the top dogs a little bit early It won’t hurt Weidman to fight at least one more time before the title shot.

    • nick says:

Yes your have good points about he should fight another top guy but not Bisbing style wise I think its bad for him because of Bushings stand up and under rated takedown defence he showed against Chale

  10. B-rad says:

Thought Munoz was gonna run right through him, WOOPS!! glad i didnt bet anything

  11. maurice says:

i knew munoz wouldnt run through him, only cus munoz striking and takedowns are kind of overrated. but to watch him take munoz down with ease, and scare him constantly with choke attempts was shocking. then to watch that beautiful elbow land that led to the brutal gnp finish was just great. this guy has serious potential. he looked real composed against a tough fighter. be careful wat u ask for, anderson offers WAY more then munoz. im down with the chris/silva fight. fuck it, give anderson someone new. if not put vitor against weidmen.

  12. B-rad says:

The winner of Lombard v Boetch or however the hell you spell it fights Weidman for #1 contender

  13. B-rad says:

IDK though Weidman is a beast but idk if he would really be able to challenge Anderson.. He does have a good single leg so he might be able to put him on his back, once or twice but if he cant sub him, hel get TKO’d eventually

  14. GET RID OF GUIDA (forever) says:

man Weidman won’t do anything to Silva, He took down and controlled a purple belt in jiu jitsu who just came back from surgery! Weidman would get owned by Sonnen, Bisping or Lombard. This guy needs to fight another top contender first

  15. Pijan says:

Weidman, Lombard, Bisping. It’s safe to say out of the three Lombard deserves the shot less than anyone else. Lombard/Stann, Weidman/Bisping for the no. 1 contender slot. Winner of Lombard/Stann could be next in line afterwards.

  16. some dude says:

Make this fight happen i dont want silva to sit out he doesnt fight much anymore i want more title shots.

  17. HyLyfe808 says:

Ha! I knew it! Munoz is the only wrestler that can’t translate his skills well in MMA. What a joke calling out Silva. He should just stick to coaching MMA fighters how to wrestle. He would be a great gate keeper for the gate keeper in the Middleweight division.

  18. Vassilis says:

hahaha every single guy who wants to fight Anderson has said he can do stuff to him but in the end the result is always the same.

  19. mean170 says:

haha, this dude has 2 decent wins, Munoz and Maia(that Maia fight was absolutely awful) and now he can submit Anderson. Someone should tell these children to respect the greatness and get in line. Silva would destroy this dude worse than he did Chris Leben.

  20. Shawn says:

Kid has a lot of potential. But not good enough just yet for Silva. Plus, White already mentioned that if Lombard beats Boetsch (which I believe he will in short order), he will get the next shot at Silva. And for those claiming he doesn’t deserve it for the simple fact that he’s new in the UFC, let’s not forget, he has more of an unbeaten streak than Silva does. 25 to be exact. 1 draw, and 24 wins. 20 straight since his draw to Noke (I believe), back in 2007. For those who have never heard of this guy, Youtube his name, plenty of KO highlight reels.

  21. GRT 3000 says:

easy champ – he did good but needs to face a few more dudes that have also earned their way.

  22. blacksheep says:

here we go again with the hype. mark munoz does stupid shit like that like get headkicked and knocked out by matt hamill. i dont wanna see this weidman guy and anderson fight. its gonna be the same shit all over again. hype the guy up and anderson beats him in two rounds. give Anderson Jon Jones.thats when we can see two fighters on the same level fight.

  23. Krinkle says:

I say Nick Diaz vs Anderson Silva.. Striker that moves forward and a great counter striker.
