Moonsprout is an Eco-friendly baby store, in down town Hilo, that I started in July of 2007 when my first daughter was almost two years old. The idea began to develop for me while I went through the trials of being a new parent, as I got to thinking about the future of our upcoming generation, and as I realized a niche needed to be filled in our community for alternative parenting products. I began using cloth diapers with my now three year old daughter Sunday Pumehana and cherished each piece of advise and encouragement toward the process I received. I knew that a store that not only sold reusable diapers in Hilo but also educated those families interested in the process could spotlight an already growing trend right here on our island. So my journey has begun. My husband, Kanoa Miura, and I are now cloth diapering our second child, Cricket Mahina, while running two businesses and are proud of the fact that through our busy lives it remains a constant, simple routine that is a contribution to preserving the 'aina for their future.
Moonsprout is a place to find gifts and every day parenting tools that are safe for our children and gentle on the earth, it is a place to stop and chat with moms or nurse your little one, it is the beginning of my long term goal to spread the word on how important the choices we make as parents today are for our children's tomorrow.
I will leave you with a few quick facts to feed the fuel of your thoughts...
Each child will use an average of 8,000 disposable diapers before they are potty trained
Creating one ton of trash (thats weight so can you imagine square footage)
Taking, what we can only guess as about 500 years to break down
although the contents never disappear... like plastic that simple breaks into micro parts that enter the ocean, consumed by fish, and then our children
Disposable diapers are made from crude oil (one cup per diaper), harsh chemicals, tree pulp, and SAP (the same thing they took out of tampons for causing toxic shock syndrome)
On the other hand you can save thousands of dollars by using cloth diapers, along with energy, trees, water and landfill space, while teaching the next generation by example to become GENERATION GREEN.
Mahalo nui loa for taking the time to read my thoughts.
