And in my whole life, I’ve probably said six words to Herb Dean, and every time it was, ‘Hi, how are you?’ That’s all I’ve ever said to Herb Dean. I think he’s the best referee in the business. The guy trains in mixed martial arts. He knows what it’s like to be punched in the face. He knows what it’s like to be choked. He knows what it’s like to be in a lot of these submissions.
You look at a guy like Steve Mazzagatti, this guy shouldn’t even be watching the UFC, let alone reffing it. You know, every time that guy is standing in there it looks like he’s doing his [expletive] grocery list while guys are in there fighting. And the list goes on, there are guys that are just bad refs and judges. I would love to see fighters start becoming refs and judges, I think it would be great, and it has to happen.”

herb and josh are the best refs in da business. and i disagree, mazagatti isnt the worse. i think its a tie between dan mergliota or however the **** u spell his last name. and kim winslow. i was horrified watching steroid king mo ground and pound that dude with no ground game to death..while kims dumbass just watches as the man is sleep taking continues bombs. wait, i just remembered the joe warren vs pat curran fight. whoever the **** that ref was he deserves to be fired right there on the spot. dat was hard to watch.

Herb is no doubt the best.
But the Vitor v Ruble fight sticks in my head… literally gave johnson 2 seconds to work on the ground when they fought… a ****ing fix :[

Those were good stand ups there is no set time limit as to when a ref can consider a reset. It was clear Johnson was trying to stall.

I do agree with you that he stood them up much quicker than usually. I was pleasantly surprised by that, but none the less surprised.

Big John is by far the best when he is in there but herb is tops of the usual cast of refs. That said I’m 100% against fighters becoming refs and judges, because it’s a random draw for what judge/ref gets what fight and so you could have a ref/judge who was a former training partner or rival of a fighter. Then there is no way to ensure there wasn’t unfair basis if it’s a close fight. Then there’s the basic way a wrestler would weight a TD vs how a striker or bjj guy would. The answer isn’t to get new judges it’s to develop a more clear cut scoring system as it stands now it’s vastly different from 1 fight to the next.
True judges can score just the way they feel. a TD without follow-up shouldn’t be scored higher than a knockdown, and yet some judges seem to overappreciate the TD’s

They should take the refs and judges they have. Put a class together w all the bad calls and decisions in the UFC’s mind and show them how it should be called w an example of correctly called fights. Also then explain the difference in styles and what’s really hurtful and what just looks like it did, as well as explain the rules and remind them it’s not boxing or wrestling. And how to tell the difference between someone LnP or someone working from top position. Slim the judges a bit. Keep the correct ones who paid attention and keep doing continuous education like a lot of careers. That’s pretty simple. That way they can show commissions and refs how to do things right. If not that is how this sport will die.
I think the British ref Mark Goddard is one of the best in the business and that’s because he’s was a figher. At one time on eof the best under 90kg guys in the UK. I agree Mazzagatti sucks.
What’s Dana’s real problem with Mazzagatti? Steve’s called hundreds of fights and now he’s a tool? Maybe Dana should shut up since he’s been too big of a ***** to get in there himself. Maybe he shouldn’t run a fighting league, not being a fighter and all. He’s all mouth and money. I’m waiting for a fighter to punch him in the mouth, or maybe Mazzagatti.

personally the 9 point must scoring system is trash dont kno how many fights i seen where it should have been a 10 8 round and got scored a 10 9 but far as fighters jump in the biz i think if u trained with a guy that should be screened so bias dont jump off and lets get the pride stall carding system back in effect problem is they score it like a boxin match and its not a boxin match
i like to see Dana figth mazzagatti. he is stupid when his favor figther is a striker and the oponent take him down he gets mad. or the other way. if you work on take down yo sure try all day, and if you are better boxing,striking well learn how to stop a take down and keep it on you feet.
