Velasquez Tells Dos Santos 'You Gotta Get Through Me First' Before Overeem Bout | UFC News
By Jamie McAllister
Heavyweight contender Cain Velasquez comments in an interview with The MMA Hour.
In his last bout he defeated Antonio Silva in devastating fashion stopping ‘Bigfoot’ in the first round. Since then it had been thought he would go on to rematch Junior Dos Santos for his UFC Heavyweight Title.
However UFC President Dana White spoke out following the UFC On FOX 4 post-fight press conference stating that Dos Santos wants Alistair Overeem next.
“I’m in line next for a title. For Junior, I have the most respect for him as well as a person and as a fighter. I think he represents the sport very well. But as a champion, if you have a number one contender, then you don’t normally get to choose who you fight. You just have to fight the number one contender. Then that’s it. That just how I feel about it. As a champion, you just fight whoever is next in line. You don’t get to pick and choose who you fight. I don’t think you as champion should choose who you fight. [Junior]‘s not ducking me. He’s a great competitor. He’s a great fighter. I just think Overeem and him had some words spoken back and forth to each other and he wants to fight him. He really wants to fight him first, wants to beat him. But you gotta get through me first.”
Velasquez thinks he is the current Heavyweight number one contender and wants his shot at the UFC Heavyweight Title. He states that he will do everything in his power to secure the rematch with Dos Santos.
“I see that. That’s just the way I am. I’m definitely going to go out there and show a good fight. But as far as the trash talking beforehand, that’s just not my style. I know fans want to see that, but like I said before whoever is next in line, you have to fight him. You being the champion need to fight the guy next in line, not pick and choose who you fight. With whatever he’s (Overeem) is going through, I don’t really care. I just know what I’ve done to get here. Whatever I was promised, I was promised. That’s just how I see it. I definitely want that fight with Junior, so I’m going to do everything in my power to try to get that fight happening. We’ll just see how it plays out, I guess. We’ll just have to talk to Dana a little bit here and there and see where he stands. The only thing you can do is try to get this fight going. That’s what I want. I want this fight.”
Velasquez also mentioned that his management team are scheduled to meet UFC President Dana White later in the week. The meeting could potentially reveal who will be the next challenger for the UFC Heavyweight Title.

I like Cain, but one win over Bigfoot doesn’t propel you into the number one contender position.
Overeem doesnt deserve this fight. he just entered the UFC.. Tell me who else deserves this fight besides Cain? Cain will reclaim that title and end up fighting overeem.. We can go online and bet money otherwise stfu faggot
He didnt just “enter the UFC” he entered the UFC and RETIRED Lesnar.. A win over Brock is more impressive than a win over bigfoot, but Reem had his chance and he shit it away.. So i dont care who JDS fights next
Bob, Bob, Bob..such harsh words coming from a ***** like you.
Easy to write it down huh? Just be lucky you didn’t say that to my face keyboardwarrior.
Now back ontopic:
JDS will beat Cain again, he has excellent takedown defense and better stand-up.
Cain got ktfo by JDS…tired of people crying and saying he got caught or wasn’t himself…the mfr got his ass handed to him..JDS beat him already and The Reem was the #1 contender prior to his issues.. let him and JDS fight..since when does beating Silva who was coming off a loss propel you back into #1 contender status after 1 fight? Cain needs chill out and wait his turn..he had his chance at Jr and got tooled
Since when does using roids not exclude you from fighting?
The mother ****er is on suspension until the end of the year. And then he still has to apply for the license. He won’t be cleared by the NSAC until after January, and then a couple months later AT LEAST for the promotion by the UFC and training camps.
You want the entire heavyweight division to wait a potential 9 months just because some ****er used steroids?
Overoid had his chance and he shot up. Cain is the only one left and isn’t failing piss tests like it’s going out of style. **** Overeem, the guy is a cheater and he doesn’t deserve the treatment you’re wanting to give him.
bob brock fought for a title his second or third fight in the ufc atleast reem has fighting exp and i believe werdum would beat cain now that he is back plus i think its a better fight to watch werdum vs jds
Yeah I agree only one win and he gets a rematch. All the guys in LW division ahve to win 5, 6, 6 sometimes 8 fights in row to get a title shot. I think Cormier should have gotten a shot at JDS before Cain. Cormier is on a much better win streak than Cain
I agree. Cornier is a beast, very well rounded
Cormier, if you didn’t know, is in Strikeforce. Yeah, his last fight for them is coming up, but even after that fight, he still has to go through negotiations. We shouldn’t put JDS on ice until an opponent is ready because AN OPPONENT IS READY. Cain IS the number one contender in the UFC. Overeem, as much as I like him, should again earn his way up the ladder because he was found to be using banned substances. To give him the fight with JDS before Cain would be unfair to Cain. And if the UFC doesn’t give it to Cain, I would say give the next shot to Werdum. Just not Overeem.
Allow Cain to fight JDS again. Let it be solved in the Octagon. If JDS is that good, he should have no problem with Cain and it should be an easy payday. But if he loses, well, it would be safe to assume that he isn’t who we all thought he is. And if he avoids Cain, it would appear that he is scared of Cain.
I like JDS, but Cain is a beast. If you think destroying Bigfoot was not impressive, you have never been in a fight before.
Totally agree that one win does not put you back in contention. I rather see a fight that’s interesting than a fight that’s due to contention. Besides that with the multiple shows that UFC puts on per year, they need to have better matches (and not RE-matches).
I’m tired of rematches. Especially after a complete one sided victory. Give JDS Overeem and Cain gets Werdum.
I like this I also think Fabricio has a more legit claim for a title shot than Cain !
Think Werdum JDS should be the fight if not Overeem could promote the shot out of it like Werdum held a grudge for so long and now he’s the underdog coming in etc
good call brotha.
let the ufc set up the match the fans wanted to see a year ago: JDS v. Reem
next two in line are definitely Cain + Werdum.
its a lot to risk for cain.
i agree A james
UFC has 400 fighters on their roster yet we constantaly have to watch rematch after rematch. i can see if was like asplit decision or bad judges like Machida, Shogun 1. But Cain was KO’d in like 30 seconds. It wasn’t even a 1 round fight. let someone else in top 10 get a shot at JDS. Cain needs to go abck line and work his way back up. Beating a fighter taht was coming off a loss does not ICE a TITLE shot IMO. Werdum, Cormier, are ahead of Cain
HE ALREADY DID CAIN.
Cain Velasquez Deserves The Title Shot More. Hes Not On Steroids, People Like Overeem Are Letting The Sport Down.
Cain Velasquez is a joke ..
Rogan.. Cains the total package .. Look at his leg kicks jds doesn’t kick !
2 seconds later Cain gets knocked the **** out hell never be able 2 hang with jds and Bigfoot ****ing sucks
Well If Some1 Like JDS Hits You Ur Going Down, Cain Velasquez Is Probably The Man To Beat JDS .
What Cain is trying to say is really “Hey JDS I gotta get through immigration first.”
Didn’t JDS take the Belt from Cain? So shouldn’t he get first crack at a rematch? I think that Cain got screwed out of the rematch because of the Money UFC would make off JDS vs Reem. Don’t get me wrong JDS will retain the belt, but Cain does make a point about being #1 contender is all I’m getting at.
**** alistair cheatin ass. i dont think he deserves a title shot, but i would luv for his ass to get koed and sent to the back of the line. cain’s a beast, but he doesnt deserve a shot with 1 win over the freak show big foot. i think cain vs werdum is one of the best number 1 contenders fight in years. but that leaves jds without a credible opponent…**** it, book jds vs reem. jds will brutally send that steroid abusing freak out of the ufc on a stretcher. and cain plz just be quiet, cus one more brutal loss to jds and u aint going to see a title shot for a long ****ing time.
Cain Velasquez & Junior Dos Santos Are Complete Fighters, Id Love To See Jon Jones Fight Them. Instead Of Fighters That Could Be Middleweights
Cain doesn’t really deserve a title shot. He won a fight he was supposed to win. He should fight Werdum and JDS should fight Overeem. Make it happen.
JDS needs to take out Overeem and Cormier. After that he’s cleaned out the division. If Cain does win against JDS Cormier is going to leave the division to hunt down Jones at LHW. There are a lot of factors here.
Werdum vs Cain is all that we need. Cain needs to just take it, a W over Bigfoot isn’t that impressive…yeah he busted his face up but come on I think anyone in the HW divisoin can do that to Bigfoot. Werdum has been on a upward trend and would give Cain some trouble.
Also I think everyone wants to see JDS vs Reem.
TRUE heavyweight contenders in order:
Alistair
Cormier
And then Cain
Chill out yall!
If styles make fights, the sequel to boxing vs ground and pound would be crappy again. JDS went through Cain’s shoulder barely grazed his ear and he dropped like a girl. Yeah bigfoot was a mess, but he’s slow as shit and beat a half retired littler emperor. JDS is a boxer give him a legit mma striker, Hunt or even Rua.
I agree a putting a good striker against JDS would be the best option to secure a great fight, but Rua can’t make HW. He’s already walking with a spare tire around his waist in 205.
