Rashad Evans is '100 times harder to wrestle than Ryan Bader, claims Coach Van Arsdale

By Lewis Mckeever:
Rashad Evans’ head coach Mike Van Arsdale has been singing praise of “Suga’s” wrestling talents. The imperial athletics instructor took some time out with MMA Fighting’s Luke Thomas to discuss Rashad’s upcoming mega-fight with Jon Jones:

“The fight, all these fights, come down to distance, and who controls where the fight goes, so…controlling where the fight goes is called wrestling. So this is a wrestling-based sport. The striking is there, and when you’re doing your striking that’s how you’re controlling the distance, so the transition between striking and wrestling will determine who wins the fight. Whoever can perform the transition best will win.”

After summarising the importance of wrestling transitions for UFC 145’s main event, Thomas shifted the discussion towards Bader and Evans. Arsdale went on to compare the wrestling prowess of the two fighters:

“Rashad is 100 times harder to wrestle than Ryan Bader in MMA. Because I just said it. Whoever controls the transition, and whoever is good at that will be good at MMA, and Bader’s not very good at it. I’m not saying anything bad about him but he’s working on some of the wrong things, and Rashad’s faster than Ryan Bader. And Rashad, when you shoot on Rashad Evans, it feels like he weighs maybe 400 pounds. It’s really hard to take him down. Ryan Bader looks really, really strong, but he’s not as strong as he looks.”

Apparently, wrestling bull Ryan Bader isn’t as strong as his physique would suggest. You can catch the rest of the interview below. Arsdale touches on topics such as the 2012 Olympic trials, guest trainee; Charles “Krazy Horse” Bennett and his thoughts on Greg Jackson’s camp.

Van Arsdale is a G… He knows his stuff. War Evans!

  2. Whats my name? says:

I like how he talked down about Bader and all but I’m not too sure I agree with this. When it came to the wrestling game (I’ma be honest I didn’t pay too much attention cause wrestling isn’t really my thing) it was all about take downs, take down defense, and positioning. I want to see Evans win this fight because Bones needs a reality check and Evans is the man to do it, but I’m not too big a fan of wrestlers and I don’t see him being an interesting champ (if he can hold it this time [if he wins Saturday]). None the less, I think he can do it.

All I know since i been watching MMA for a long time is that EVANS was a cocky ass too back in the day (Before CNTDWN show) and once his ego got broken with LYOTO he became humble. So Evans is probably annoyed and jealous on how Jones is a top dog, and this is his chance and ONLY chance to shut Jones up…

  4. Flex monkey juice says:

Evans is gonna get smoked. Hendo, however, will massage jonny’s chin in his next title defense. then Dan will tell Dana who/where/when/if he will defend the title.

Wrestling boxing muai tai don’t have a place in mma anymore if you come from either a wrestling backround of boxing past no one wins like that anymore the sport is evolving so quick and to win now you need to be an mma fighter, instead of all these styles mma has become one style and only the guys who understand that like cruz and faber and jon jones rory mcdonald and condit
