Phil Davis on Jon Jones | "I don't think he's necessarily any better than any of the other champions"

By Jamie McAllister:
“You know, I tend to shy away from answers like this, just because everyone is so skilful in their own regard. I definitely think he’s a very talented champion, but just to be the best in the world says a lot about it. I don’t think he’s necessarily any better than any of the other champions. But that’s just from a competitor’s standpoint. I’m sure the fans would say something different.”

“I think up until Jones became the champion, a lot of people thought, ‘Oh, this is just another young guy.’ And, they went out to, basically, to really beat him. Whereas, if you take away the people fighting Georges St. Pierre, it’s very tactical, it’s not necessarily — everyone is in it to beat him, don’t get me wrong, but a lot of times, it’s a slower pace. It’s very methodical. It’s not going for the kill. Which, I feel Jones has had as his advantage that people are coming right at him. It’s easy to meet a fight head on. But a lot of times, guys are just looking to choose shots and, you know, pot shots whenever they can. It’s a lot tougher, and I think he’ll get that now that people realize that he’s a force to be reckoned with in the division.”

“That loss was good for me. Sometimes, you don’t know where you’re at, until you have a loss. Now I know where I’m at, and it gave me a lot to improve on. It’s a great starting point to go next with where I want to improve, to get to the belt.”

“In a hypothetical world, I would fight someone, definitely before the end of the summer. Probably sometime this summer. But, until you get bout contracts, there’s plenty of room for change. Nothing’s ever for sure.”

Phil Davis comments on Jon Jones as well as the loss to Rashad Evans and potentially when we will see him return to the octagon on Inside MMA.

Davis comments on Jones being no better than any of the other champions and hints that Jones may no be on par with the likes of Georges St Pierre.

He also states that the loss to Evans was good for him and gave an idea where his skill set is currently at as well as stating he would like to fight again before the end of the summer.

Who would you like to see Davis face in his next outing ?

Hahahahahahahahaha. What will you pos’s say after Jon wins this weekend? “oh he got lucky????

        • Ninja Oreo Dollop says:

          Yeah probably. LOL

        • IknowMMA says:

Rashad wining this fight Is not a fantasy he could do this… Is not going to be easy, Jones has a lot of reach advantage and some great momentum, it would be nice to see him win or lose, I have no favorites in this match but my I instinct says Rashad is taking this one… But who knows!?

        • Ninja Oreo Dollop says:

If I were Rashad I would tire Jones out and play it safe for the first couple rounds then take him down for GnP while he couldn’t defend himself due to fatigue. But, Jones arms are so long that even off his back Rashad’s taking damage anywhere this fight goes.

    • Reality says:

He has wrestling credentials higher than both Jones and Evans in PURE wrestling. However, in MMA it’s a different story as proven on many occasions (inclusive of Rashad’s fight with Davis). I wouldn’t say Davis has an advantage over Jones in MMA wrestling(I’d favor Jones but that remains to be seen as Davis evolves). However, I’d say he has a major disadvantage in striking against Jones. Anyhow, I hope Jones and Evans have an entertaining fight with Rashad winning in the end.

      • Ninja Oreo Dollop says:

True, Jones was 39-0 in High School according to the UFC 145 special. Idk what happened once he went to college. Did he not get a scholarship? 39-0 is very impressive, what happened? I think Jones could out wrestle Davis I’m not so sure about Rashad. Pride is on the line. If Rashad loses he might have to move to 185 or work his way back up to title contender status.

        • Reality says:

That 39-0 in highschool is impressive but being an NCAA champion holds a lot more weight. College wrestling is another world from highschool wrestling. He did compete in junior college and did well but on paper Davis has the higher wrestling credentials…probably the highest in the division at the moment. I still think Jones would handle him in MMA based on what I’ve seen though. Davis needs work but I think he has what it takes to do better.

Davis and Gus are not ready for the spinning elbows and GnP of Jones.

  3. CL says:

Davis is a mediocre fighter who got found out against Rashad

  4. Bjj BB says:

Davis is hating on jones? Saying hes no different from the other champs? Buwaaaaaahahaha!! This is coming from a guy who has no stand up?!! GTFOOH!! Jones is one of them guys who can go on the ground and stand with the best and beat them, he dont pray and lay, he dont tap u and move out da way just to win by points!! He goes in there and knocks u out or submits u!! And he also mixxes it up better then any1 in the ufc right now, he simply does things that no1 else can, well only the spider can as well, other then that, davis is boring and needs to beat a top guy b4 running his big dumb mouth!!

  5. Nick says:

He has a point. I don’t really think he’s hating. He’s just calling it as he see’s it.

  6. Ninja Oreo Dollop says:

Davis would get lit up by Jones. Picking your shots did nothing for him against Rashad LOL!

No doubt that Davis has talent, idk who his striking/muay thai coach is but maybe he should get with Duke Rufus. He trains Pat Barry and he has some sick striking ability and power. He just so awkward in the striking department. You can’t be top 5 in lhw without some striking ability as far I am concerned.

  7. Bjj BB says:

Hes hating cuz he is comparing jones to the champs we have now, how is jones the same? Other then the spider? Theres nothing special about the other champs other then them being champs, id love to see bendo-edgar, carlos condit-GSP and jds or any1 in the ufc do wat jones does!! So thats y im saying hes hating, even more so cuz davis will never beat, oh wait! Has never beat any top 205 guy, so where does he come off talking like hes gods gift to the ufc, theres a reason y ppl love jones, the same way they love randy, bjpenn, gsp and all the other great champs, but ppl are having a hard time understanding that cuz he did it faster then all of the other champs!! So tell me how do u not see that as hating?

    • Jesse says:

Last I heard alot of people dislike Jones…maybe you’re one of his cult followers. But come one plz get ur head out of ur ass. U are the only one thinking Davis is claiming to be Gods gift to the UFC where infact Jones claims it. But all champs fight a certain style and have evolved their style, Jones on the other hand hasn’t. He just goes in there and does the same spinning backfist, when he goes against someone who counters all his moves hes going to have to evolve his game and fast. He is too green to evolve he is going to stick with what has worked and when its not working hes going to break. But seriously you can only compare Jones to Silva weak arguement.

What I see it as is his opinion and is a insiders observation. So you’re going to argue that every fighter commenting on this fight is hating. You should just go back to watching WWE.

      • wtf. says:

You’re an idiot. Obviously you hate Jon Jones. Saying his style hasn’t evolved is rediculous. and even if it hasn’t, why fix something that’s working perfect and beating the top lhw’s that get thrown at him.

  8. Ryan says:

Nice article ! Good to see something other than jones and Evans this week ….. Davis has a point JJ is not superman !

  9. Ninja Oreo Dollop says:

Chuck or Wanderlei in their prime could beat Jones. You either need to be really aggressive (with a great chin) or a great wrestler (to neutralize that reach) IMO. Rampage could have killed the hype months ago if he pushed the pace. Jones did close to no damage to Rampage.

  10. Ryan says:

Rampage never had a chance !

  11. jbeamazing says:

Davis has a great chin and crazy wrestling if he just took a year off and worked the striking I think he could compete with anyone at light H

  12. Mmmmmeeeeehhhh says:

Anyone else think Bader would destroy Davis ?!

  13. Mmmmmeeeeehhhh says:

  14. Not You says:

This was the most truthful thing anyone has ever said regarding Jones. And most I these people are getting more upset than Jones will about it. You need to chill the fuck out, you aren’t Jones and you don’t know what it’s like to be in someone’s shadow. Jones is the LHW poster boy now, no one cares about many other LHWs now that he is in the picture.

  15. Mmmmmeeeeehhhh says:

    A love dis site !

  16. Tim Silvias career says:

Hey Davis, Give me a call. we can team up for a comeback. PLEEEEEEEAAAAASSSSEE

  17. Edward says:

Davis is boring. He will never get a belt.Lmao I wrestled in high school, college and all Army. But it was a different world when I started mma. Evans is a good wrestler with no chin. Or did everyone for get he can’t talk a punch. Jones will finish Evans. Then who’s next? Davis not.Lmao

    • pthance says:

Evans has no chin? What are you smoking dude? Watch UFC 98 again, Machida launched a barrage of strikes, somewhere around 25 headstrikes landed before the KO, and rashad fell to the ground like twice and recovered both times before the KO happened (all in like 15 seconds). I think you need to watch again…either that or you have changed the definition of “no chin”. Reading Wikipedia doesn’t give insight into a fighter, it just gives stats.

  18. Stew says:

jon jones loss the first round to machida. he is no superman, he can just utilize his skills with his reach advantage…
