UFC Releases Uncut Video of BJ Penn Interview
Sometime this evening over at Mixedmartialarts.com a report ran stating that Dana White released video footage from a recent interview with BJ Penn that discredits the multiple time UFC Champions statement from this week that the UFC interviewers made him say he was going to beat Nick Diaz in their upcoming UFC 137 co-main event.
The report reads as follows and the video is displayed above:
Early this week, BJ Penn said that his fight with Nick Diaz would not be personal, but just business. The UFC star went as far as to claim that the UFC production staff had also forced him to make statements regarding the Strikeforce champion that he necessarily didn’t want to say:
“they forced me to say, at the end of the whole thing, they forced me to say… ‘You gotta say Nick Diaz’s name now, you gotta say his name.’ And I was like, ‘What?’ They were like, ‘Say you’re going to beat Nick Diaz. Say you’re going to beat Nick Diaz.’ And I said, ‘I’m going to beat Nick Diaz.”
The complete video blog can be viewed here: youtube.com/officialBJPenn
When asked to comment on BJ’s accusation, Dana White was adamant that the story was not true. To back up his point, the UFC President supplied the raw and uncut footage of the interview directly to MixedMartialArts.com:

Knock this punk out BJ. war bj.
being a die hard bj fan i thought it was gonna be much worse than that but still you shouldnt have ufc guys telling him what to say in an interview. thats messed up but just goes to show that the ufc is moving toward wwe style. i dont like the way its headed.
I think the real reason he needed to say Nick’s name is so that no one would think that it was recycled footage from the Condit countdown. If he said “I’ll win on saturday night”, then some people might get pissed and think that the UFC is just reusing the previous footage
Dana is a douche for releasing it… . Even though the statement is very likely out of context. but, I bet Nick Diaz is going to get butt hurt. ahahaha
Bj did the same thing releasing his own vid,
The interviewer didn’t tell BJ say anything, but did ask the question to get THAT answer. WTF is BJ gonna say; “Uh no, actually, Nick’s gonna defeat me.”…c’mon. BJ has a point — the interviewer should not have asked the question; it’s inflammatory, amatuerish and unprofessional.
if you ever fought in a promotion you would understand they all ask you to say something to hype the fight.
I don’t fight in a promotion, and that has nothing to do with my point which is:
The interviewer said, “Point blank: will you defeat Nick Diaz?”, then “Say it again”, “Say it on October 29th”. Of course BJ is gonna say what he said, there’s only 2 people in the cage that night. It’s pretty obvious the interviewer lead BJ to say exactly what the interviewer wanted him to say, which is no different that telling him what to say.
The reasons why this is relevent is that on a large PR platform and post-editting it can look really bad, thus BJ got out on front of the quote before it was chopped up and fed to Nick Diaz, which, let’s not forget, is his friend. Who would do any differently?
All that being said, this comment has served to make clear my perspective on the matter. Hoping this thing blows over (if it hasn’t already) so that it doesn’t serve as a distraction from the training or from the fight.
huh? He asked him a question that he knew the answer to; way different than saying, please tell me that your going to win the fight…there’s only one answer to that question, which makes the entire thing meaningless. Just cuz Nick Diaz is going to have a hissy fit about it, whatever – he hissy fits abt everything.
I agree with tom on this one… I dont think bj saying he is gonna beat daiz does anything to make this fight more exciting. They are two of the best fighters in the world and that should be enough for any mma fan. Besides they are friends and probably share alot of the same fans so shit talk is just unnecessary in my opinion. Hey Dana, give the fans better ppv prices and maybe u wouldn’t have to worry bout hyping up a fight so much. Dick
Very well said bro.
i wanna hear BJ say how nick would have been alot better off fighting gsp .
If BJ would have said YES to the question, interviewer would have asked tell us what you gonna do. BJ would have said i will defeat Nick Diaz. Smart interviewer. It’s simple based psychology. It’s not his first hype UP!
BJ Penn: “they said, ‘say your going to beat nick diaz’”
Reality: “say it again”
twisted slightly, but still trying to start shit. Why would he ask him to say it again
BJ PENN ALLL DAY
Bj got this then the belt!
I actually hate this fight because it features the 2 fighters I respect and admire the most.
But at least the winner will get a shot at the bitchest fighter ever, yeah GSP, or rather GSBitch
War BJ anyway, you are the best, and screw Dana White GSP’s bitch which makes him a bitche’s bitch
Why is BJ making such a point that he didn’t say anything that could remotely offend Nick Diaz? It sounds like BJ is scared of him.
sounds like u wish u could be a reporter.
sounds like you are annoying
@NN, nick and BJ are friends in the fight world, trained together. BJ didnt want him thinking he was running his mouth. i guess.
I don’t think he’s scared, I think BJ is just a nice guy. but still, why tiptoe around cry baby Nick Diaz? He’s going to shit the bed no matter what people say. That’s his thing – shitting the bed.
True, actually I dont think he is scared, but why this late in the game try to explain the interview process? We all know it is BS, especially pros like Nick
It actually kind of does. Weird.
I’ve yet to see BJ back down in the cage though, and Nick isn’t the big power wrestler type to bully BJ, so I think he’ll get the win.
Could just be that they do respect each other and he doesn’t want to say anything to make Nick think he’s a dick.
Yes, I think you are right. I think BJ is just going out of his way to show respect.
Please don’t say that. BJ is never scared of no one. But he respects Nick Diaz because both of them are TRUE fighters. With the soul and the skills of a true Warrior.
Nick Diaz also respects BJ . Quote :”f I saw B.J. Penn walking down the street and called him a bitch, we would be fighting right there on the spot.”
While this is what he said about GSBitch : “”That’s some real bitch [expletive]. He’s sitting there laughing like it’s funny or something. If I saw Georges on the street and called him a bitch, I bet you he wouldn’t do [expletive]. I bet you if I walked up and gave him a slap, I wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t do [expletive]“
True. I think they are both going out of their way to show respect to each other. I just hope they stop the friend stuff in the cage and have an all out war because both of them are among the most talented and will put on a fight for the ages!
No one was holding a gun to B.J.’s head there when he made his intitial statement that he would defeat Nick. It’s just silly anyways. It’s an awkward situation for them. But they are going to have to treat it like business and fight a clean fight.
True dat.
I think everyone is looking way too far into this. I think he just posted something interesting about the way UFC interviews fighters, and its on HIS website where he always posts videos about his daily trainings and run ins. We should be greatful that at least 1 fighter out there allows us fans to look into their daily life and training. Now everyone is speculating that “BJ’s scared of hurting Nick’s feelings” or ” They didnt hold a gun to his head and make him say these things” etc…….. I say take it for its face value and move on to the next video. Stop trying to analyze everything people.
Unfortunately B.J. said he was “forced”, to say he was going to beat Nick. So, now it becomes accusatory, which is why Dana replied. He knows that would be unethical and, I believe, even illegal as an employee of the UFC. Of course, it would never come to that, but it’s still bad press for the UFC and I can see why Dana provided evidence to the contrary. People are attempting to drag him through the mud lately with the whole “Nick episode”, and frankly, he doesn’t deserve it.
I think EVERYBODY says that they are going to beat their opponent. Kinda funny saying “well I think there’s a slim chance I’m going to beat the other guy”. Ha ha
What’s wrong with saying your going to go out there and do your best and hopefully all my training pays off and I leave the octagon with a win……. Seems the classier way to say it.
A bj all I want to say to you brother,is get the belt back and kick is ass.I’m behind u all the way do it for the lslanders guam.
I can already see BJ as a 2-time ww-champ.
That is all the footage? lol
Come on, that is the only footage the UFC wanted to put out there is more like it.
Never trust what the UFC or Dana White has to say about anything.
That was enough footage to show that B.J. confidently made that statement by his own unmanipulated, free choice.
BJ 4 Life. I have nothing against Diaz.
never trust bj
bj has some huge guns
im a huge penn fan to but lets be honest here, he will beat diaz no problem then get stomped by gsp
Just for the purpose of Diaz being the worst example of what this sport is all about I hope bj makes him tap due to a side angle calf crank.
Who cares, just fight…WAR BJ!
lol damn man those ufc reporters are so tough and pushy… its like they held a gun to BJ’s head and made him say i will beat nick diaz and like for $*&( why would they make him promote the event date ? jjjjeeeezzz
