| We finally had a fight on the main card go past the first round, but that’s as far as it would go as Leonardo Santos took full advantage of his underdog role and submitted William Marcario in the 2nd round with am arm-triangle choke to become the TUF: Brazil 2 Champion.
Macario, who was undefeated at 7-0 before tonight’s TUF Finale fight, came out very calm, hands were down, and he stood sterm right in front of Santos. He took control of the fight from the start, scored a couple of takedowns and landed some big punches from Santos’ guard. For only being 21 the kid looks experienced beyond his years. I like what Kenny Florian said when he stated that Macario was “so calm, he’s always in the right positions. All the little things.” It seemed that things were going to go his way the entire fight, but it all changed when the first round ended.
In the second round the tides turned in the favor of Santos. When the bell sounded to start the round Macario looked as if he was extremely tired and had quickly lost all momentum coming out of the first round. His punches lost their power, his octagon control was lost to Santos’ increased pace, and his speed had dropped drastically.
As the round went on it became more and more apparent that Santos was only delaying the inevitable; a Santos submission victory. Late in the round Santos scored a takedown with a beautiful side-throw and quickly passed to a full mount, which led to Santos locking up a very tight arm-triangle and the TUF: Brazil 2 title.
The come-from-behind victory was very impressive and it will be interesting to see what the UFC decides to do with the welterweight. Kelvin Gastelum, who was the most recent winner of TUF in the US at middleweight, just announced that he’s dropping to welterweight as well…that might be a match-up to eye in the future.mma, MMA NEWS, ufc, ufc news, ufc on fuel tv 10 results
