Chael came out on fire, putting his wrestling skills on full display. His initial attempt to throw Shogun backfired as Mauricio sunk his hips and landed on top of Sonnen. Chael didn’t waste any time on the bottom though as he came back up to the feet, went to another clinch and this time launched Rua in a beautiful belly-to-belly supplex. From there it was all Chael for the remainder of the round.

He maintained control of Shogun, landed some big bombs from the top, and even passed through the guard of Shogun.

With about thirty seconds left in the round Shogun scrambled came back to his base and shot in on the legs of Sonnen. Chael immediately locked on to a guillotine choke, looked up at the clock, realized there was only about thirty seconds remaining in the round, dropped down into his guard and completely committed to the choke.

Shogun tried to defend, he wiggled a little bit but could not pop out or hold his consciousnesses for the final seconds of the round and was forced to tap out.

Chael Sonnen notched the submission win over Mauricio Shogun Rua via submission due to a guillotine choke in the final seconds of the opening round.

Following the fight Sonnen called out fan favorite Wanderlei Silva and said he wanted to fight him in three months time. We’ll see how that plays out in the coming days. Usually, if the past is any clue to the future, Sonnen gets what he asks for. That fight with Silva could be his next.

The win over Shogun does not put Sonnen back in to title contention just yet but it keeps him at the top tier of competition and allows for several intriguing match ups for him in the near future.  Sonnen wants the fight with Wanderlei, so we’ll see if that’s the what the company wants for him next as well.

As for Shogun, he was trying to get himself back up to a title fight with Jon Jones, the man that stole the UFC strap from him, but this loss surely knock him back down to the bottom of the contention ladder. Still, his big name and legendary credentials will open him up to several other interesting fights as well.

Stay posted to BJPenn.com to see what the UFC decides to do with Sonnen and Shogun next.
